Which is the "better" method to install the bullet guide:

1. Drill, tap, screw, locktite

or

2. Drill all the way through the trunnion, (no tapping), bolt, lock washer, nut, and locktite

I drilled and tapped my 7.62 Saiga and it was solid as a rock after adding blue loc-tite. There is some risk involved with breaking the tap because I hear about it from time to time, but I did mine and my friend's at the same time using Dinzag's kit and they came out great. We just went really slowly, used a little oil and kept backing the tap out every full turn or so to keep from breaking the tap.

Maybe drilling and using a nut on the other side would be safer? Not sure really but I'm thinking if you take your time tapping would be the neater, tidier option.

I drilled, tapped, and loctited.  Has been fine.  Just remember to go slow with the tap, and use oil.  For every turn of the tap, back it out 1/2 turn or so, then continue.  Maybe a bit of overkill, but I tapped both of my 7.62's with no issue this way.

well that must be why I broke 2 taps!

I have done this on 2 rifles so far, although I have not loc-tite...ed them yet. On my list of to-do's. One thing I did notice is that the screws I used had to be cut down or they would interfere with the cleaning rod. Probably  happened b/c I broke the taps I got from Dinzag and used a slightly bigger one from the local Lowes. I did shoot the 1st one I did the other day and very little loosening, but def. do the loc-tite, and follow what they said, I will next time

I did the drill, taped, and locktite method on my gun using the dinzag kit also and it worked great. Then i attempted to do the same with my friends gun and broke the tap! Well at least i got my gun right. I ended up having to weld his bullet guide in which was tedious and really difficult with a MIG welder. I spent about an hour dremling material away before his bolt would close. jeez, it was a mess. But his rifle works perfectly now and i dont think his bullet guide will ever come out! but i suggest using Dinzags tap kit. just take your time, and use oil.

I would think it would be easy for welding if you drilled the hole and did a plug weld to the gun. Then just dremel off the top. Shouldn't be too messy if you are decent at welding..  I think I will try that On mine that I have not converted yet.

Drill, tap, install test.  If it works 100%, remove the screw, degrease, and apply Red loctite.

Drill, tap and locktite worked fine for me. I didn't buy the guide, made my own. I wouldn't do the drill through method personally.
