| Does anyone have a step by step conversion guide? I have found a couple for .223's and 7.62X39's - but none for the 12. Any help would be much appreciated! |

An S12 conversion is much easier than the rifles, if you buy the right parts.
With a rifle, the hardest part of the whole thing was drilling that damn spot weld on the trigger guard, IMO. Which had to be done, if you wanted to use the factory trigger guard after conversion, which is easier/cheaper than buying a whole new trigger guard/mag catch kit. But with an S12 conversion, you can buy either a Saiga-tech or Tromix trigger guard, which includes the trigger guard itself, a safety stop and grip mounting hole (S12's don't have PG holes pre-cut like most rifles do). That alone, makes it so much easier. Also, the FCG has to be ground down a little. Maybe someone can jump in and explain exactly how, or you can check out the Saiga forums. I went the lazy route, and just had Cobra from the Saiga forums do the work on my FCG .
Also, if you use a retainer plate, it too needs to be ground down a little. But I'm not sure if that's only if you plan on using the BHO or not. |
I second Shooter's advice and also want to emphasize what a b*tch it was to drill through that spot weld. Russian steel is effin hard as hell
I went the long route and reused my trigger guard, plus had to cut the square in the receiver for the PG nut. All tedious but for me fun and a good learning experience. The aftermarket trigger guards are great and really simplify the whole process but frankly I just don't like the angular look, so for me the reasons against using them are purely cosmetic. My retaining plate had to have the hole where the safety fits through enlarged to fit the S12 safety lever. Not really sure why but they aren't the same so I had to do a little modification. The G2 hammer will definately have to be ground down to fit, but its the easiest thing in the world to do...just look at your stock hammer and compare the difference. You'll see the G2 has a fatter bulge that prevents it from going far enough forward to hit the bolt and firing pin, so all you're really doing is removing the bulge that keeps it from going all the way forward. Some have said they needed to grind out a slot for the bolt hold open to fit right but I elected to not even re-install my BO. Too much of a PITA for what I do with my S12 mostly, but also because I plan on doing the magwell route later on. |
