My step-son gave me a SAR-1 for my birthday and I know next to nothing about them. I've shot many AKs and variants over the years but I've never owned one. What do I need to keep on hand for spare parts ? Any known problems ? Also the length of pull is a little short for me. What stocks are out there ? He also gave me some ammo to go with it. I better go burn that up right away. 7.62x39 goes bad, right ?

Congrats on the SAR-1! They are tough as nails, you wont need any spare parts, they hardly ever break. As far as problems, some have canted sights, but that is about it. One trip to the range will answer that question. As for longer stocks, K-var has them and several other places do. Do a general search on the computer and you will come up with several parts suppliers. I have 762 ammo in ammo cans that I have had around for over six years, never had a mis-fire. 762 ammo has gone way up in price lately. The best buy seems to be "golden tiger" from Century or Aim or one of those outlets, about $150.00 per 1000rnds. This is my SAR-1.

KTrout,

Sounds like you've got a great step son. An SAR 1 is a outstanding gift. I would think most forum members would rate a SAR 1 as one of the best Romanian AK's out there today. Also for the money it's one of the best buy's (in my opinion) for post 1989 AK's. I haven't heard of 7.62 having a short life span. If it does I hope some other forum members can elaborate on that.

Good Luck.

Thanks for the info. I meant that MOST ammo tends to not last long in my care. It ends up going down range long before it goes bad.
