Hey guys! A customer at the shop where I work brought back a WASR-3 he recently purchased from us. On its inaugural range trip, he experienced what I believe to be an out-of-battery ignition or case-head separation using Lake City 5.56 ammo (not sure of bullet wt, or if it was first-quality stuff or the XM). According to the customer, the shot immediately before cycled fine, then the next shot, BOOM! Damage to the gun included: extractor and spring were blown out, the right side of the receiver was bulged at the chamber/trunnion area, the bolt carrier partially jumped its rails and was jammed shut, the rear sight was blown up to the 90-deg position and was twisted, and the topcover was bulged and blown off (hit the customer in the face). The magazine (Weiger 30rd) appeared to be unharmed and the barrel did not look obstructed. No fired case or remnants thereof were recovered. Customer was uninjured save for a little scrape where the topcover hit him, and some slight redness on his support hand from powder burns. Gun is being sent back to the distributor from whence it came, along with a sample of the ammo in question, for further analysis. A replacement rifle has been ordered. Wish I'd had a camera handy; I'd liked to have taken some pics. I've never seen anything like this happen with an AK. Customer stated he'd been shooting Lake City ammo for years in his other guns without incident (it only takes one bad round, of course). Just wanted to remind everybody to "be careful out there." |
| I agree with ARMIKEFMJ... I have a WSAR3 as well.. it FTE every 2 or 3 rounds when the gun gets hot... after a few trials and errors I found that my WASR3 does not like the ammo I was shooting. I use remington box ammo from walmart.. and it really chewed up the tail of the round.. I switched to some wolf steel case ammo and the damn things works fine.. other than a bad trigger slap.. it's somewhat reliable.. plus when I first go the rifle the gas block was severally I mean severaly canted to the right... so I guess WASR 3 is a problematic rifle.. but with some work it could turn into a reliable "tool".. as far as trigger slap.. since mine has the "newly" designed century trigger inside.. its absolutely horrible.... |
