I was thinking of getting a VEPR or SA M 5 but Im a cheap ass so:

Im in the market for a good 5.56x45 rifle and Ive heard some good things about the Romy SAR 3. How much can I reasonably expect to spend to get one and what are the suggestions to get the thing teaked. i.e. addressing issues like trigger slap and replacing the less than quality american internals and so on.

Thanks

About $400 here with one converted bake mag, all original.

ONLY Red Star Arms makes the correct geometry hammer for the SAR3. Bulgy 5.56 bbl sits differently in the Romy 5.45 rec...

Also consider a Saiga home conversion.

The issue with any 5.56 AK is the mags - reliability and availability.

SAR3s run well with the wieger mags, and they are available in some quantity. The bakelites work or not - but they are (or perhaps were) cheap enough. Buy double and if only half run, its no issue - and usually can be fiddled and made to work. Nothing at all wrong with the SAR3s. Surprised how accurate mine have been, but they are a little rough (they are prone to the same issues of all SARs) - not rough enough to bother me tho.  $400 is a fair price, but you might do better.

As usual, RS39 has a good idea, esp if you are as cheap as you say. Not as cheap as once was, but you could do a Saiga for less than you could buy most SAR3s. RS, are you set up for Robarms modified 74s in yours?
