Hey guys, I've been hanging out here for a week or so and wanted to wait to post till I got my new Ak out of layaway.  I just picked up this wasr 10.  It came with 2 30 round mags and the other usual stuff an AK comes with I guess.  I have been shooting firearms for close to 16 years, but this is my first assualt weapon type rifle.  Out of the box it looks rather decent, but I definitly plan to make some changes.  It came with all this grease crap all over it, for corrosion protection during shipping I am presuming ...

Anyone know the best way to get this AK cleaned up and spiffy?

Thanks a bunch, I'll definitly be hanging around these forums ... I take help where I can get it :).

Just wipe it off... it's a protective coat, don't worry. It comes off rather easily. Just use a good-sized handtowel and some elbow grease and it'll come right up.

However, your SAR-1 looks tip-top. Welcome to the ever-growing dark side. :D

Welcome aboard Mike.

Nice looking rifle. Like the others said, just wipe it down and shoot the heck out of it.

Is that surplus ammo you have there? A lot of that stuff is corrosive. Spray the bore and chamber, bolt and piston with Windex to wash the salts away and then clean like normal. The ammonia in the Windex neutralizes the salts in the corrosive ammo.

Welcome aboard, Mike - and congrats on your purchase... I have to say, that my SAR-1 was one of the best values in firearms I ever fell into.. I hope you enjoy your WASR-10 as much, bud... I'd recomment picking up a few of K-VAR's Bulgarian Waffle mags - these are great mags, at a very good price...

In FL, just line your trunk with a bunch of newspapers, lay the gun inside on a bright, warm day, and the grease will run down. Then lube the moving parts in the receiver, but not the gas system since the oil will burn on the surfaces there, and shoot.

Hey, that's pretty ingenious! Where did you learn that?

Although with my luck the grease would bleed through the papers and make a huge mess. :/

Same Parallax C&R board (source of LOTS of cosmoline) where I learned how to use a heater duct with a portable electric heater at the other end to degrease an old gun without nasty chemicals that may discolor the wood. Them milsurps are too big to put in the oven...
