I thought I would share with you my ammo box project for my 1960's era Czechoslovakian Light Ball 7.62 x 54R that I got for my PSL.  I loved the pine box with the lead encased ammo.

But the box was pretty dirty and leaving marks on my tile floor so I decided to strip the entire box down to the bare pine wood beneath and clean off all of the old paint.  I used a metal wire stripping wheel for my electrical drill to do most of the hard work.  I did use some sand paper to clean it up a bit but it's still pretty rough, which I thought was good for the feel of the project.  I then sprayed a primer and did used a matte black finish.

I found some stiff felt at Michael's craft store, using contact cement to ensure it didn't move.  Here's the final result.

I am hoping to eventually get a Romanian TT-33 Tokarev to put in the box.  Then I will paint a bright red hammer and sickle on the outside and on the felt inside along with some other markings to denote what is inside. It was a fun project and now I need to refinish the PSL from my Baby Seal Grey finish.

Looks good and using it to store the TT33 sounds like a cool project, be sure to post pics of it when you're done.

Man... half the charm of the box is the markings.  Which are now all gone... Now it's just a box.
And I'm pretty sure that's zinc not lead?

My Russian crate was just wood, no metal liner.  No paint.

If it was putting marks on your floor they sell those felt pads for the bottom of furniture for like $1.
But hey, it's your box.

I did that to some of my metal ammo boxes (not the 50 and 30 cal green ones but the bigger metal boxes) and they turned out ok but not as good as yours.  That looks good.   I did mine to stop rust for the most part.

I have that exact same czech box of 54R under my bed.  Found it this weekend.  I forgot I had that ammo.  I have so much 54R ammo that I forgot I had a case of that under my bed.

Thanks for the replies folks!

Thanks for the heads up on the metal, I have no idea if it's Zinc or lead, a neat fact to know though.

I do have plenty of free time, one of the few benefits of being unemployed...you know idle hands and all...

The old box had some character but the project was fun.

I've done some work on 30 cal ammo cans I got from J&G Sales.  They were new from Venezuela I believe, with a little rust.  I sprayed some black paint and they work great for storage in my safe.

I'd love to get a Tokarev, it seems the supply has run low from vendors...but I'll keep looking.

Thanks again!

Nice work, but to me (like someone else said), the charm comes from the markings.
