Hello gents, Took my new PSL to the range today ( This actually is my second PSL . I purchased the first one about five weeks ago. First trip to the range resulted in blown primers and two case-head separations. Called Century, explained the problem and sent it in for repair. Century sent me a new rifle. Took about three weeks. Century was very easy to work with). Rifle came with a 4-power Romanian scope and two mags. So . . . here’s my report: Weather: Sunny, but chilly. High today of 45 degrees. Rifle: Romanian PSL rifle. Caliber 7.62 X 54R. Kinda like an AK on steroids. I added a Red Star FCG (borrowed from one of my AK’s) and a Blackjack buffer. Scope: Romanian 4-power scope. VERY clear and bright. Chevron type reticule. I have a 6-power Russian scope, but it is not as clear and bright as this little 4-power scope. Took a few minutes and a few adjustments but very easy to get the scope to shoot POA/POI. Reticule seems to be pretty much in the centered in the scope. I removed the scope numerous times and it always returned to zero. Cheek pad: I picked up and Advanced Technology cheek pad. Used pins instead of screws so I could remove the cheek pad and use the iron sights (had an extra Romanian RPK rear sight on hand, so I installed that – very easy to sight in the irons). Then attached the cheek pad with a short nylon strap. Worked out great ! ! Forearm: relieved the wood slightly under the lower hand guard so it was not touching the barrel (Thanks for the idea, Bossman ! ! ) Ammunition: All light ball. I had Albanian, Bulgarian, Hungarian, and Polish on hand. All groups were fired off a rest at the lower hand guard and a sandbag at the rear of the stock, about one minute between shots. I was really disappointed with the Hungarian – would not group under 4 inches at 100 yards. This stuff is GREAT in my M-39’s, and most of my M-N’s, -- I have a ton of it on hand -- but no luck with the PSL. Brass cased Bulgarian average about little over 2 inches at 100 yards. Even the cheap Albanian would group 3 inches at 100 yards. But . . . I saved the best for last ! ! The Polish ammo would easily group at 1 ½ inches at 100 yards – if I did my part. Truly amazing for surplus ammo, I would say. Most groups doubled their size at 200 yards. Shooting observations: This is a very easy rifle to shoot. At first the rifle just would not group like I thought it should. But after about 50 rounds or so, it seemed to “settle in” – just look at the Polish group sizes ! ! Fired at least 160 rounds – zero problems. As for the scope, once sighted in at 100 yards it was good to go. Also fired groups at 200, 500 and 600 yards. Just dial in the elevation and squeeze. I had a couple of bright yellow targets – about one foot square -- at 600 yards and was hitting them most of the time. Scope is very easy to use once you get used to the chevrons. This is by no means a sniper rifle by U.S. standards, but a really great DMR (designated marksman rifle). No doubt I could hit a man-sized target at 700-800 yards. So . . . what’s next ? ? Want to mount a bipod on the lower hand guard and give it a try. And the scope – not sure if investing in an 8-power scope would improve the shooting capabilities. Sure, I would be able to identify the target better, but anything else ? ? Needless to say, I am VERY pleased with my new PSL. I’m sure she’ll be going to the range a lot this summer. Only have a few cases of the Polish ammo on hand – guess I had better start looking for more . . . . . . . |

I love my PSL and it is awesome to shoot. My GF loves it and she weighs 100#. If you buy another scope beware of Kalinka, their customer service sucks. I ordered a 8x from them and it looked way too big for me. At any rate I think this is my new favorite gun! I had just finished tweaking my Remmy 700 with about $800 worth of upgrades and I haven't shot it since picking the PSL up. Now my BRD is quickly turning into an AK issue. |
