The ban of '89 restricted weapons with military features from being imported, so the Chinese and other countries simply removed the features (flash hider, bayonet lug, pistolgrip unattached from the main buttstock, etc.) and kept importing the new "sporter" style firearms, such as the MAK90.  The ban of '94 only banned domestically made assault weapons.  The ban that ended the importation of the MAK90s, the SLRs, etc. was passed on April 6, 1998 by Clinton.  Many people don't realize this and I found out in the ATF publications that my dad received when he had a gun store.  Here's a link to the publication online, it requires Adobe Acrobat to view it, scroll down to page 15 of Adobe(actually number 167 in the book), it's in the middle column.  Read the whole section that begins at the bottom of the page before it, it details all the bans-good info on a BAD subject!!  ATF Bans Publications

Edited to add:link takes you to the correct page, no need to scroll down.

Does this mean the price will go up as time goes on?

Christmas tree lights, cheap plastics, defective electronics, "hunting" style firearms, shoddy sneakers, third rate tools, but no ammo or "military" type firearms.  Go figure.
