My one and only grandfathered 'AK' is a nice Poly AKS-762 spiker, full stock.  Am I going to burn in arfcom hell if I mount (as in permanent/rivet) a Russian or Bulgarian QD scope base to it.  Ultimak and the dog-leg are options I am leaving off the table.  Either Irons or a nice 2 minute dot Aimpoint.  Not concerned about collector value per se...they only seem to fetch $1200 or so.  I cant realistically get another AK here, unless I get a mag-lock and neutered mags...which is lame.  Hence the dilemma.

Suggestions, por favor.  Probably going to mount that Klingon looking FH/brake that (FSC?) has too, if it will clear the spike bayonet.  Anyone done this with both?  Can it be made to look all OEM?  Yes, aesthetics count-if anyone has pics of a CHICOM rifle done up with a ruski scope mount, I'd appreciate a post.

Thanks!

If aesthetics count, you'll get 0 points for originality.  If they truly count, then why are you making a rifle that originally never had any of the things you plan to put on it?  Kind of defeats having the original rifle only to change the look.  It's unfortunate you live in a place where you cannot purchase and keep standard AK-type rifles newer made.  However, you undoubtedly realize a permanent modification to your Chinese pre-ban rifle is regarded as a sin... and it's permanent.    So is putting a ridiculous flash hider or such device on one that isn't original Chinese.  But I understand you want to customize the only AK you can have that resembles an AK.

Why don't you go the route of finding one of the cheap top cover or gas tube scope mount rails and mount your scope that way.  It's not permanent and gives you a scope, although not the best way to mount one but it works.   However, if you want to put a scope on an AK, put it on something that at least looks like it should have a scope - a Chinese rifle, not so much.  IMHO, a Chinese Type 56 spike bayonet rifle is going to look utterly goofy with a scope.  Think really hard about if you want to go that route or if you ought to get a CA-legal AK that already is all it can be and put a permanent scope mount on it.  Remember - it's an AK, so don't expect ultra-accuracy from it simply because you have a scope on it.  I think you might get more fun out of a CA-friendly longer barrel AK with a scope.

Good points, and I do like the idea of a Ultimak scope mount and a T-1, but there are a half dozen posters that have observed optics failure via heat transfer-I'd hate to fry a $600 piece of glass.  I'm thinking real hard about a 7.62 version of the Type 84 flash-hider in keeping it CHICOM at least.

I really don't want a neutered fixed 10 round AK cluttering up my safe-I may as well use an SKS (not a bad rifle, btw) at least I can use stripper clips!

Decent optic, Larue quality, and reversible.

I wouldn't even think of making any permanent modifications to my Norinco underfolder.  While I sympathize with your situation (at least here in NY we can still buy preban rifles), I wouldn't do what you're suggesting.

Please leave the gun the way it is, and save your cash to eventually move out of that friggin state!  There is simply no reason to do either mod, I have shot bone stock AK's just the way they are, and have never had a problem.  If you need quick target aquisition, just use the poor man's EO-tech-the front site!  Forget the brake!  I have shot rabbits on the run at 200 yards with my front site, just learn to shoot the gun the way it is without any tacticool crap on it-you just might suprise yourself.  It is not about what the gun is worth, it is about dorkin up a perfectly fine gun the way it is, for no real reason other than being bored!  How much do you shoot it anyway?  Practice makes perfect.  Use the dough to buy more ammo!  KFS is going to have there rails back in stock soon-(they replace the rear sight) for optic mounting, or go Ultimak if you cant live without an optic.

 Well I vote no!

I have decided not to permanently mod the Poly.

Leaving the state is not an option.  Frankly, I am not shooting a whole lot of ANYTHING centerfire.  Ammo is just $$$.  Mostly rimfire for fun and practice.  Yugo M67 is reasonable though.

Mixed reviews on the LaRue Iron DOT.  I like the idea, but a lot of AK gurus are not happy with the Burris side of it.  They all want a Doctor or the new Trijicon version.  Some people allege that an optic like that is too fragile for CQB, but I do not buy that.

I have not always been endeared to the AK, but watching Sonny Pozukas <spelling ?> work an AK has been very sobering, and has me playing with Poly again.  I do wish I had the sidefolder version with bakelite inserts though.  Sigh.

A friend has a legal full auto sidefolder Norinco. I have a very early Clayco import, and two Poly Legends; an under folder, an a NM. I swapped out the wood PG on the folder for a bakelite type one, but other than that, I wouldn't change anything. AKs are meant to be simple. Yes, the sights are short radius and basic, but that's why they have 30, 40, 75, or 100rd mags. I would like to find the perfect mount for the longer barreled NM version and maybe work up some handloads, but I wouldn't expect too much for all the trouble. I have many other guns to fill that role. Unless your eyes are getting bad, don't bother about a scope, or just do the Ultimak thing with a cheap red dot.

Don't do it man!  That would ruin value of the rifle.  Just buy a new rifle all together!

I'm not a perist by any means. I do have to ask though. What's wrong with the Ultimak? I have one with a red dot on my MAK90 and it just plain works. Another option is the Larue AK Iron dot sight which co-whittness the iron sights. If you use the Ultimak with the Aimpoint T-1 you can also co-whittness the iron sights.

Anybody got pics of a modded Polytech?  (Remember I am trying to remain within the scope of state law...I would LOVE a real '105', but if I could even find one, I would have to use low cap mags and a mag lock.  Blech...what's the point.   At least my grand-fathered Roos-Roberti/SB23 Poly can use my 30 rounders!)

I'll probably try the Ultimak and a T-1 Combo and a Type 84(?) or slant FH.  Wish the CHICOMs had a scope rail integral the receiver though.

Again, Poly pics-please!

Flash hiders are illegal in CA. Even if the muzzle device is only a compensator but it's mis-listed as a FH ANYWHERE in the manufactures website or paperwork it's illegal. Be very careful about that.

Yes and no.  There are two ways to skin that cat LEGALLY in California.  A FH on a new build is a no go, UNLESS you have a off list type (Kassler compliant firearm) and you install a 10 round (neutered...lame-I know) and a magazine lock (Radlock, Prince 50 or Bullet Button type)   -OR-

You have a legally registered pre-ban, that has been RE-REGISTERD with every stinking AW ban/compliance window...i.e. Roos-Roberti in '89 and then again SB23 in 2000, etc.

Thanks for your heads-up though, even though you are a FLORIDIAN!    Heck, you may even be a good intentioned Kali refugee...

Like most Kali arfcommers I try to be vigilant about this stuff, and it is a real drag about Kali gun laws...but I am 100% Legal!   Try calgunsdotnet for a primer on 'How to own a gun and stay outta jail' primer for Kali.
