I have this Norinco AK:

I bought it back in 1989. I have put a lot of rounds through it since then.

I want to upgrade it. My plan is to install a Ultimak mount, and a new handguard with a heat shield, and grip. Oh and remove the spike bayonet.

I plan to use this rifle as my truck gun.

My question is this. Is it worth it to do this? Or is this rifle worth enouth to sell and buy a new one?

Those pre-ban Norinco's are very nice rifles....personally, I would not fuck with it.  They are pretty hard to come by these days, especially with the folding spike bayo.  You could buy a real nice WASR for around $350 and personalize/update it..or you could pick up one of those new Romy GP 1975 AK's for aroung $425 and do the same thing.. I just bought one of the GP 1975's and it is a fine rifle for the price...its just begging to have some TLC also as it has the cheap plastic handguards and a Tapco stock that I replaced with the good K-Var shit.

Maybe it's just cause I'm partial to those Norincos but it seems a shame to defile it.

Plus you could probably sell it for a handsome price and buy a new AK to do whatever you want with and still have some cash left over for a decent amount of ammo.

About a month ago i was in my local gunstore and spied one in their back room, when i asked the guy about it he said some guy had come in the week before to sell it as he was in some kind of financial trouble....than he said the store owner snatched it up later that day when he came in and claimed it as his own and not for sale...which kind of struck me as odd because this paticular store has walls of AK's for sale..some of which are much nicer than this particular Norinco.

Shit...they have a Polytech Legend on the wall with a $1499 price tag and the owner opted for the Norinco anyway.

But hey, it's your gun...do whatever makes you happy

P.S.  I was not implying your rifle is worth $1500 but it is one of the more sought after models

Its your rifle........I would not remove a thing from its current showing, like my other forum brother said, buy a Wasr or assembled kit gun for your modern rifle, the chinese you have is worth much more in current unaltered condition!!! my 2 cents......

Well I will look into selling it. I don't wish to anger the AK gods.

I just want an underfolder with some updates to keep in the truck.

Now if I was going to sell this, what route should I take? Gunshow?? Or one of the many internet auction sites??

Sell it here on the Equipment Exchange.  There will be much intrest for it.  Other sites like gunbroker.com usually get the attention of lots of serious buyers with the money to spend also.
Good luck getting what it's worth at a show... . it never seems to happen.  I doubt any dealer behind a table will give you a fair offer and you will be damn lucky to run into a person that is willing to drop that kind of cash on the spot on an impulse buy....although a very nice impulse buy.

Seriously, it won't be that hard to sell...even if everybody was not starting to freak out because of the upcoming election.... and the very real possibility of another AWB possibly more restrictive than the first.

Kind of good timing on your part huh?

As it's your rifle, you can do as you wish with it.  But down the road, you may regret some of it as it's a pre-ban rifle.  Give a look here and you'll understand:

www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=110791151

There's only a finite amount of them in the US and they will NEVER imported again.  EVER.  But it's your rifle and rock-on with whatever you want to remove, cut, add-on, glue, paint, drill, or weld.  Just let us see the photos of what a $1500 pre-ban rifle looks like when it's been made into a $500 post-ban rifle.

In all seriousness, sell it and buy yourself two or three rifles.  Make one of them your "truck gun."  Or hold onto it for a while longer and save-up for a beater AK for your truck.  As fun as your gun is to shoot, it's also become a collectible and has quite a value.  You might want to limit your shooting of it (or keep shooting - it's yours so have fun) and consider it an investment toward something else more practical down the road.
