are hungarian ak's any count? what are they usually priced at and are they easy to find at local gun shops, etc?

YMMV, I consider the older SA85Ms to be one the best AKs made.

Paid $254 for mine a decade ago, last time I saw one for sale at the gunshow they were $450 or so.

They are indeed durable, the $450 price is about right for a postban (thumbhole stock, no bayo lug), $650-800 for a preban.

I do have to dissappoint you on one point though, unless you are planning on dropping well over ten grand you will not be getting any kind of assault rifle. It may be symantics, but I am silly that way.
