An acquaintance has a post-ban, thumbhole stock SA85 that he is
considering selling. I'd like to make him an honest offer. What do these
usually go for? I haven't actually seen the rifle but it is supposed to be in excellent shape.

If I get the rifle I promise to post pics!

Thanks.

$700-$1000 depending on condition and what the auction will climb to.

However if it has the shorty piston then I'd say he would be lucky to get $600.

Dont wish to hi jack but this is a good thread with viable info.

How do you know if the pistion is a shorty and can it be changed out?

Thanks for the replies all. The guy with the rifle is out of town so I still haven't had a chance to see it.

From what I've seen online, it looks like one variant has the gas block further back on the barrel than a standard AK. That would require a shortened piston and consequently a non-standard gas tube.

Okay, some of them were imported with the short AMD65 gas system. Personally, I don't see why they would be any less valuable than the standard gas system. Just to make sure what you have, look at the receiver. It should look like this one:

Note that it has the FEG logo, SA 85M, CAL 7.62x39, SEMI AUTOMATIC, and MADE IN HUNGARY

The rifle should look like this:

There was a recent rifle being sold that was made up from an AMD65 kit but with wood stock. It is not worth as much as the post-ban SA85M, and it looks like this:

The SA85M is valuable because it is 100% Hungarian-made, in the factory that made the military guns by the same people and using the same quality materials. These guns are all straight and smooth-functioning. $650 is about tops for the post ban and $450 is probably lo-ball.

Thanks for the replies. I finally got to handle the rifle the other day. It is an excellent, almost like new, all FEG original SA-85M that looks exactly like the thumbhole stocked rifle pictured above. Gas system is standard AK length.

The thing is now he's not sure he wants to sell it. That and I should probably save the money with Christmas coming up and all. Oh well. I'll ask him again in a few months.

Thanks all.

A little off topic but where did you locate the middle picture of the sa85 on the tan cloth?  The reason I ask is because it is my rifle.  Could care less it is floating around, just more curious than anything where it came from.

Thx

I probably got it on this forum. I have had it for some time, so really don't remember. I've posted it several times because people always want to know what they originally looked like. Unfortunately, mine will never be able to be in that form again.

'From what I've seen online, it looks like one variant has the gas block further back on the barrel than a standard AK. That would require a shortened piston and consequently a non-standard gas tube.'

And it would have all those parts and be completely operational, so what's the problem? It's the AMD65 gas system. You could put an AMD65 front end on that rifle if you wished - the short 'naked' gas tube fits it. There is even a short USA-made gas piston for the AMD65 if you were to convert the SA85M with short gas system to buttstock and pistol grip and needed it for your 922 sheet. I had an AMD65 front end on my standard-length SA85M at one time. I had to make the gas tube out of a standard Bulgarian. This is approximately what the 'AK63' looked like.

I've never seen an AMD pistoned Hungarian go for less or somehow be less desirable than a standard pistoned Hungarian.

And its very easy to get a US made AMD piston for the parts count.

Funny thing is I think I have finally decided to make her more AK like now and loose the stock and do the parts count thing to keep her legal.  Now I am just trying to do it right and not half ass.
