I'm fixing to pick up a SA 85M.  I'm new to AK's and it doesn't come with a magazine, can someone suggest some decent magazines for me to pick up?  I prefer metal, but plastic isn't a deal breaker, preferably something affordable.  I'm assuming there's lots of junk to watch out for.

Get comblock steel AK mags.

US mags aren't there yet and are more expensive.
AIM Surplus has them for $10/per

I use these. I'm not even sure steel mags would fit in my AMD65 so I decided to go with these since they are easy to file down to fit.

I have an AMD-65 and really love the 20rd mags. I can still fit the 30rd in there easy, but prefer the 20's as a box of ammo is 20, helps keep the weight down, the gun generally handles better. I have a buddy with an Arsenal AK (no front pistol grip) and he has grown to love the 20rd mags as well.

I must be weird but I like using the Tapco 30rd that came with it. Ive got a few of them and they all work great, no issues with the front grip either

I would definitely recommend steel surplus mags.  They are not only cheaper, but have always performed better for me.  Copes Distributing has them for $8 or $9.  Aim is another good place to grab them.

An SA85M in original condition, either pre-ban or post-ban, can use any magazine. Consequently, European steel military magazines are your best bet. If it's a post ban and has been modified, the requirements of 922r come into play, and the compliance scheme for that particular rifle might require 1, 2, or 3 USA parts in the magazine, and such magazines are the only ones which may be legally used with that particular rifle. So before you buy it, you need to know for sure exactly what it is.

The 10 dollar Combloc steel mags from Aimsurplus are silk compared to the polymer mags I've been using. I've ordered several more. No filing needed to fit.

Bulgarian 30-round or Hungarian 20-round would be great if legal on your rifle.
