I'm thinking of installing a fixed stock on my AMD-65 because I can't get a cheek weld with the wire stock. I thought of purchasing a new receiver, stock, lower hand guard, trigger guard, mag latch, and spring. I already have a fixed stock rear trunion.
I would then have two complete receivers with hardware and furniture and could switch back to the original configuration if so desired. The original receiver and stock would be put away in case of such a decision. What do you guys think, is this idea worthy of the time and money it will require? I welcome all input. |

Since you already have many parts, why not go the little bit extra and get the rest of the parts and just build another rifle on the second receiver? Interesting idea, I hadn't really thought about that. After posting this last night I got an e-mail from a friend asking if I would be interested in a Yugo RPK kit. I haven't heard back from him yet so I don't know any details but if I get it I'll leave the AMD-65 as is. |

Once a trunion/barrel ass'y is properly assembled to a receiver, you just can't casually switch receivers like putting a new upper on an AR-15. You would have to remanufacture it each time, and the rear trunion is not easily swapped-out either. It's just not a viable idea. Definitely leave the AMD-65 as-is and practice shooting it without the cheek weld and also with the stock folded - that's one reason why it has the front grip. The other reason is the same as the AMD-63 - as an 'anti-rise' grip during automatic fire, and to keep the hand away from the steel fore arm which could get hot during extended fire. I doubt if very many AK owners have the AMD-65 as their only AK.
P.S. You also can't take an AK with (for example) a NoDak receiver as-manufactured and put that same numbered trunion into a different receiver such as an FEG SA200M, for example, unless you have a manufacturers FFL. At least this is how I understand the rules. |

Obviously I'm not an AK builder so I'll learn to live with the AMD-65. Hopefully the RPK deal will work out. |
