I recently picked up a pre '89 SA 85 fixed stock AK for $750. I feel like I got a pretty good deal. What is the going rate for these guns? It had the night sites (which still glow) as well as the cleaning kit in the stock. It did not come with box or bayonet.

| It is a KBI gun, but it has the bayo lug as well as a threaded barrel and correct Hungarian furniture. I was under the understanding that KBI imported pre ban guns as well. It is not one of the nuetered thumbhole stock SA 85s that can be found for around $600 or so. |

It could be, but if so, whoever did the conversion was a master gun smith. The gas block has the bayo lug, the barrel is threaded with the slant brake, the front sight has the detent in it to stop the slant brake and the gun is finished (barrel, gas block, and front site base included) in the black "semi gloss" finish as the other Hungarian guns. The rear site as well as the front site have the correct night sites as well. The gun also has the cleaning kit that fits into the stock.
The seller stated that the gun is pre '89 (he could have been incorrect) and stated that he bought the weapon from a preacher who bought the gun pre '89 kept it and didn't fire it much. I field stripped the weapon and it doesn't look like it has been fired much at all. It is totally possible that the seller was lying to me, but if he's not, I find it pretty unlikely that someone who isn't that interested in guns would have a Post Ban SA 85M debanned to perfect specs by a very talented gunsmith just to keep the gun in his closet and sell it to a dealer many years later. I will try to take detailed pics of the gun and post them on here when I chance. |
