Is there an FAQ anywhere that details the SA 85M guns and what they are?

Reason I ask is that I have heard of "short tube FEGs", and such, and wonder what the differances are among models.

I may have a remote chance at trading my Yugo M70AB2 U/F for a FEG SA 85M, and I am already questioning the Romy PSL WASR buttstock on it and the laminated front handguard. Not very FEGish looking to me...

Thanks!

Good question mac1045.
I too would like a sticky about the history of the SA 85 pre and post ban variants.
From what I understand, there are only about 7000 pre-ban Hungarian rifles in the U.S., - and it's unknown how many post ban 85 guns there are from FEG or any other importer.
Also, if you've noticed, most threads in this Hungarian section are about the AMD 65.
Most posters here can't afford the SA 85, so there won't be many discussions about it.
A history search won't help either, even if you're a team member. There is something wrong with the search engine now since the new changes to the web site.
I would say, keep your Yugo and don't trade it no matter what. Also, be wary of any SA 85 on the EE until we get
a good sticky here on what to look out for.

The 7,000 number is exactly correct - 3,000 fixed stock variants - 4,000 folding variants. All of these pre-ban (Kassnar) will have the regular length AKM gas tube. The short gas tube versions are found on some, but not all of the post-ban (KBI) models.

I have an SA85M with the short gas tube. Don't know why it's short. They must have had some short tubes and decided  to get rid of them by putting them on the sporterized exports. Who knows? I would like to know the story. Mine is a KBI import that had the thumbhole stock. Beautiful gun! I put an ironwood stock set on it and swapped out the Hungarian FCG for the parts count. Finished the stocks so it has the nice blonde color. It's my favorite AK!

Kassnar's are all preban
KBI (Kassnar) postban.

Michael Kassnar,President, K.B.I., Inc. posts on the site and has the Charles Daly Industry forum here and posts as Kaz53 and Charles_Daly, I believe.

Most people believe that the postban rifles with the short gas tubes were put together just before the import was banned and they used whatever parts FEG had to build rifles.

Some info is available at gunsnet but not much.

I sold most of the AKs I had but did keep my SA85M which started out with the thumbhole stock. It has the shortened gas tube. I got it a year ago for $425.00 I believe.

and its current configuration.
