Greetings,
Thought there might be a few who would be interested in a range report from my new SLR-106FR. - I purchased this rifle a few months ago to be my "Modern AK" or "AK-74" clone
(e.g., polymer furniture instead of wood, folding stock, etc.) Also, I already have a more "traditional" variant in 7.62 x 39 mm - In conjunction with the above, I put a "Texas Dogleg" scope mount on it, with a
CompM4s red dot scope... has turned out a very slick package (for an AK) - Also, I intentionally went with 5.56 mm NATO caliber instead of the Russian 5.45 x 39 mm; ammo
commonality and availability were the main drivers of this choice. - I had nearly a case of Barnaul, heavily lacquered, 5.56mm ammo I had purchased over
10 yrs ago that just would not run in any AR15 I owned-- couldn't go 5 rds without tearing a rim off & having to clear it. This stuff had been relegated to "junk" status in my garage, and I just hadn't got around to getting rid of it (and not on the range either!). Long story short, I gave this stuff a "whirl" today and ran 5+ magazines without a hiccup. (in the SLR106) Now, I still don't know that I'd use it for a true self-defense situation, but I think it's a valid ammunition choice for practice/plinking now, in particular given the cost of good 5.56 - Recoil and muzzle flip were just as tame as all the forums claim (which is to say, extremely
manageable) - Accuracy seemed about what AK's are known for... maybe 3-4 MOA. I will say that my
AUG (in spite of a 'squishy' trigger) was a bit more accurate. - I'm fairly tall (6' 2"), and the stock was a tad shorter than would be ideal for me.
- - - - - - - - A few final thoughts: - I'm using the Arsenal 5.56 mm mags (both translucent and black polymer); are there any reliable
cheaper alternatives to these? - Does anyone know if a 'standard' AK repair kit will work in this gun? If not, does anyone offer one?
Comments/suggestions welcome. SD |

- Yes, I think it's reliable and accurate enough to be a "go to" weapon; and particularly
with the stock folded, it's a compact package. - I'll probably give it a try next time with the muzzle compensator off; most seem to think it's not required that much for 5.56 mm, and it would be nice to take 3-4" off the length of the barrel... would probably balance *slightly* better without it, as well. - The way I've ended up configuring mine, I could do without the slide-on rail (I think this is the SLR-106F model); might save a few ounces. - As I stated previously, it'll shoot eastern block crap ammo that chokes any AR that I have; a handy capability, in light of the ammo shortage we have just experienced. - All that said, I think the ergonomics on my 'western' rifles (AR's, etc.) are decidedly better overall; and I definitely miss the bolt hold-open feature. Seems like, in addition to routine safety, this could be a decided advantage in the event of a true 'tactical' situation. |

For mags your best bet is Circle 10 and Beryl, avoid Promags like the plague.
For spare parts/repair kit it may be worth getting a complete bolt. AK bolts are near bullet proof, but it's handy to have one just in case and you can also cannibalize it for parts if you end up needing to replace a firing pin, extractor, etc. Also, considering they recently stopped production of the SLR106 you may wish to do this sooner than later. I bought a spare complete bolt for my 106 from K-Var last year for around $85 iirc. Pretty much anything else that may need to be replaced would be compatible with your standard AK parts, things like recoil spring, FCG, etc. |

The round count on my slr 106 F is now at 8600 +/-. I have replaced the rear sight slider (it disintegrated), the FCG (it started to slap at 8,000 rounds). Other than that it still works like a sewing machine.

- I emailed K-VAR about repair parts, but never received a reply.
- However, I went ahead and purchased a complete spare bolt from MidwayUSA for about the same price you listed - I'm not an AK expert by any means, but it appears from what I can gather that most of the rest of the parts should be compatible with a standard AK-74. - As for the mags, I think I'm just going to pay the $$$'s and stick with the Bulgarian "circle 10" version; nobody seems to have complaints other than the price. |

Perfect timing I just uploaded a video to Youtube on the performance of my 106CR and 106F, check it out!!

just remember to use the bolt as parts only. Don't just throw the new bolt in if/when your existing one has issues. Usually requires new headspace. Can you explain this a bit more? If the bolt was made in the Arsenal factory for this gun, I don't see why it would require a new headspace... Dimensions should not be changed... |

It may not headspace properly with your barrel, which is bad. Boom |

You may get lucky and have a factory new bolt that is headspaced good for your rifle, but it's not likely. |
