Got a Romy G kit built by JNEWT a month or so ago. With my current work schedule I STILL haven't gotten a chance to get down to the range with it. Just spending some time cycling it and dry firing. Problem is...it's locking open with or without a mag. The piston seems to shift upward when it is completely pulled back. So what's going on with it?? Any ideas???

Templar????  Anyone??? HELP???

With a new fire control group the bolt carrier/bolt will often lock back when cycling by hand.  Need to actually fire the rifle to see if it will operate correctly.  With the catching of the FCG while dry firing it should work itself out after a hundred rounds or so actually fired.

Lubricate the rails and fire the rifle and any burrs there should smooth out.  Some guys will put an abrasive paste on the rails and hand cycle but if the  rifle is operational and will fire it will smooth out on its own.

On my 7.62x39 rifle when the bolt carrier is all the way rearward the piston actually seems to move downward a bit.

On one 5.45x39 rifle I observed that the piston appears to move upward.

This shouldn't be an issue as the bolt carrier and piston narrow down as they exit the  rear sight block opening which allows for the movement of the piston with the loose tolerances in that area.  Take the receiver cover off and you can observe this while hand cycling the action.

Thanks MAK. That helps put my mind at ease. I'll try and get out to the range and see how it functions.
Thanks again!

Install a recoil buffer, that will prevent the bolt carrier from going all the way to the rear of the receiver and possibly coming off the track. I also polished the bottom of the bolt carrier and the hammer to reduce any friction as the bolt carrier retracts and pushed the hammer down.

My recent WASR 10 does the same thing when hand cycling. But runs perfectly when fired.
I would not worry about it until you test fire it and see for sure.

Often times on underfolders the rear trunions are pinched in from being improperly demilled, so when you rivet the receiver on it pinches the rear of the receiver significantly.  We fight against the AK bolt-hold-open "feature" all the time, LOL.
