I sold my old Chinese AKM in 1993 and immediately replaced it with a Polytech Legend just before the AWB went into effect. The rifle has languished in the rear of my safe for close to fifteen years now. I decided to go shoot it yesterday to adjust zeros and try some reloads. It never crossed my mind that I might have a malfunctioning AK! Sights were way off so I began one at a time shoot and drift front post to obtain a good zero. Began firing one round at a timescope hits, drifting front sight. Loaded one round and KABOOM. Slam fire. I installed the magazine thinking the bolt speed was too high without it. Fired a few more one at a time and KABOOM. Another slam fire. Loaded a magazine thinking the increased pressure and drag from the loaded rounds against the bottom of the bolt would slow the momentum even more. Fired several without any problems and them BRRRAAAPPPPPP! Three rounds in a row! Needless to say I'm upset by now. I loaded old IMI 7.62x39mm ball ammo and no problems at all. Feed, function all normal. The brass I used was PMC on my reloads. Federal 210M primers (25 years old - I wanted to use them up) The loaded round headspace was within .002 of the IMI factory ammo's headspace. The primers seated hard because the military crimp was removed, but perhaps should have been run through the swager a second time. All primers were below flush by a fair margin. The firing pin is spring loaded and works fine when the bolt was removed. The firing pin motion was very smooth, no binding and fully retracted without problems. I watched the action dozens of times while cycling it by hand and the hammer never followed the carrier back down which would indicate a full auto type disconnector failure. I'm hoping this was caused by the Federal 210M primers being oversensitized because I had to apply a fair amount of force to get them to seat. They are notorious for being sensitive and are not suppose to be used in semi-autos with free floating firing pins. I figured with the lighter round and spring loaded pin all would be fine. Has anyone had this problem? What gunsmith would be recommended for a Polytech Legend? I purchased this rifle new so I know for a fact it's never been tampered with in any way. It works fine with factory ammo. Thanks, borderpatrol |

Hard seating of the primer when reloading increases that sensitivity. |

Gunnysmith, Sorry about the squished post, it was my very first post on this site. I'll seperate my sentences from now on. Thanks for your response. I was wondering if anyone makes a stiffer firing pin spring? Although I won't be using Fed 210M primers anymore, I would like the stronger spring for added insurance. borderpatrol |
