I here that all of Vector's new AKs do/will not have chrome barrels. Why not? The AK, know for its rugged reliability...why would you make onw w/no chrome

I believe it's because no more AK barrels can be imported, and no American barrel makers are currently making chromed barrels - so this combination makes for a limited (and dwindling) supply. At least that's what I read on one of these forums (so hopefully somebody else can verify). Actually, I'm not an AK expert, but I'm no stranger to surplus military arms. What I want to know is why do AK folks feel that chrome-lined barrels are so important? I own and shoot a collection of WWII-era rifles of various make and country-of-origin and I don't believe any ofthem have chromed barrels. Apparently chromium wasn't something in common avail during the war years. Certainly I understand why one would prefer a chrome-lined barrel if given the choice, but I don't understand why AK folks (on the whole) seem to be so struck by this topic? I have rifles in my collection with barrels dated back to 1941 and they all look as bright and shiny as the day they were manufactured - and they undoubtedly were exposed to the nastiest primers and powder imaginable (and likely in battle at that). For collectors who demand a totally accurate representation of an AK47, I understand why chrome-lined barrels are desireable - but for shooters, it would seem that the same rules apply to AK's that applies to all firearms: Keep them clean, and they'll last "forever". Am I missing something? thirtycal |

yup barrels that were coming in with Kits are no more....what ever is out there is it....your right chromlined or non doesnt really matter, doesnt affect the rifle in any way...but I prefer mine chromlined Arsenal imports there rifles and tweeks them once here.....they should always have chromlined barrels....but who really ever knows, sooner or later there will be new rules to go by |
No, you're not. If you have the choice, why not have the chrome? But I don't feel naked without it with my Yugo SKS or Krinkov. I think the fact that the vast majority of us don't own or shoot 7.62X39 corrosive ammo almost makes it unnecessary to have chrome lining, although it certainly does wear less and it might be a little easier to clean. It is certainly nicer to have for 5.45mm rifles because of the current wide availability of corrosive surplus. |
I was told that it would cost too much $$$$ for them to make crome lined ones. I also don't see why if we can make tons of M-16 & AR-15 crome lined barrels, why we can't make crome AK barrels here too.
