I know I will be furiously flammed for this but I'm askin' anyway.  I have an Arsenal SAM 7 that I bought before the ban sunseted (so, it has the funny perm. attached fish gill brake.  She's got a milled receiver.  The damn thing is just so heavy.  I know that milled rec. are heavier...but this weekend I was chaning out the lower handgaurd and I noticed that the barrel underneathis pretty thick.  I'm thinking that barrel is really adding to it's heft.

Does anybody know where I could find an AK barrel (7.62x39) that is of good quality but not as heavy.  I'm seriously interested in sending my rifle to a gunsmith to have it rebarreled with a lighter barrel.  Know any good smiths'?

How about having a gun smith see if he can remove the muzzle brake without damaging your barrel to drop weight?  I have an AWB AK which came with a permanently attached slant brake that I wanted off, so I took a butane torch to it and took it off.

Option 2.....hit the gym and pump some weight to get stronger so the SAM7 donsn't feel so heavy any more.

So you guys are saying you don't know where I can find another barrel or a gunsmith who could do the work.    Thank soooooo much for your help.

Just sell the rifle and get one that is light enough....

You'll probably need to have a custom barrel built to your specs if you want a lighter profile for a milled AK.  It would certainly cost more than a new rifle.  Plus, most of the weight you're noticing is from the milled receiver.  I saw a chart a few years ago that listed the weights of various AK components and the heavier profile barrels only weighed 2oz or 3oz more than the standard barrels.  You could lose more than that by just ditching the muzzle device in most cases.

I've talked to several machine shops that specialize in re-profiling rifle barrels and none of them would agree to work on AK barrels for a multitude of reasons.

It's a milled AK-47 clone.  It's heavy.  That's why Kalashnikov spent to many years of his life improving the design and making it lighter.  If you can't handle the weight sell it and get an AKM clone.

AK's are heavy.  If you can't handle the weight get a 10/22 and you'll be fine.

I think for the cost of doing all that work you could get a stamped AKM and have a couple rifles. Cheap WASRs can still be had...

AKs are not heavy.  I hold my Arsenal , and then a Vector, WASR, Lancaster, or what have you and there is a significant difference...a lot more that 2 to 3 ounces.  Maybe it's the balance, I dunno.  I think the project would end up being cost prohibitive, due to good mith' cost.  I think I'll sell it and get a Lancaster or Vector.  The ones I've shot shoot just as good as my Arsenal (just a tad bit more recoil...that I can live with).

Oooh,  I should get a 10/22 or a daisy...oh I should go to the gym.  I just didn't realize this forum was so funny and so strong. Really, I should have known this wasn't the place to make this post and that I'd get more stupid*** jokes and tough guy comments than real info or answers to my questions.

Not a Flame , but you would lose accuracy - dependability - and screw up a Damn Good Rifle.

Just sell it and get something else

Joking aside, the milled AK is generally the "preferred" AK, having a more robust receiver that eliminates flexing and improved accuracy.  True or not, I don't know.

Bottom line I wouldn't mess around and screw up a good rifle.  Sell it and get an AKM or keep it, deban it, and still get an AKM.
