I am looking to add an AK to my collection as a shooter, not safe queen.  I am trying to stay in the $400 to $600 price range.  I've seen the STG 2000 and Saiga's in the lower end of the range, and the offerings from Atlantic Firearms at the top end of my range.  Also, while I don't know how to build one myself, I assume a Kvar kit plus Nodak spud receiver with a local smith's work would be close to my top end.

What should I do and why?  Thanks.

What caliber do you want?  7.62x39?  5.45x39?  5.56x45?

What stock type do you want?  fixed?  underfolder?  sidefolder?

Personally, I always think your best bet is to find a kit, acquire your receiver and compliance parts, then ship it all to a reputable builder.  You'll end up with a superior rifle that's built to your specs.  This is usually cheaper than buying a pre-built rifle and modifying it to meet your needs.

Sorry.  7.62 x 39, fixed stock

In that case, you can pick up a nice Romanian kit, a NDS or GT/AUSA receiver, and your compliance parts for ~$250.  A good smith could build and refinish the kit for ~$250 - $300 and you'd have a very nice, reliable rifle for less than $600.

Pick yourself up a Vector built fixed stock from Atlantic

Thanks, but could you let me in on your reasoning?  PS: I see you are from MN.  Ever shoot at Bill's North?

Vector builds a quaility AK, I have a couple of the Vector Polish Underfolders and a Vector Bulgarian RPK74 and they have been all superior in workmanship.

Bill's North,   I don't waste my time.
After they took it over they never  honored my freshly paid for  Armored Fire Membership.

I would recommend a Vector AK or the Romy parts kit and have it built if you know somebody that could do it for you.  A friend of mine built me a Romy that is nicer than any of the factory guns I have.

In looking at the Atlantic site, I notice reference to the Lancaster made rifles and the Tapco G2 fire control.  Is this included in the Vector made rifle?

I'd look around and try to find a used SAR-1

If you have minor gun working skills, a dremel and a drill press then a Saiga at around $275.00 or less would be a good choice.  You would have to do the conversion or for $150.00 and the minor number of parts you could send it out to RedJacket for the conversion.

Or find a used MAK-90 or SAR-1 for under $450.00.  For the SAR-1 check out linx310"s site before buying.

In the top end of your price range go with the Vector.

You might want to browse the EE to see what is available.

Thanks.  Found the website you noted.  No, I don't have any mechanical abilities.  I drive past NDS on the way to work every day.  I should stop in and pester them with my newbie questions.

If you are looking to have a rifle built check out DPHarms for a Romanian kit with G2 FCG or the AKfiles.com for member Bocefus who sells kits at around $100.00 or less now.  Some of the Lancaster built rifles are on Romanian G kits.  If you pick up one of the kits and an NDS receiver you can have a builder like MCarms build it for less.  Been alot of issues recently it seems about Lancaster builds and it is a shame as the ones I saw at the SAR show looked nicely done.

Mak: sorry, but I need a translation.  What's a G2 FCG?  Is that the Tapco fire control group trigger?  What is the conversion referred to above in some of the other posts?  Thanks.
