Trying to get educated on the AK 47 is no easy task.   Been reading all the info. on the board and decided to go off to the gun shop to look around.  Found one Norinco MAK 90, stamped reciever with traditional wood (ie) seperate pistol grip and butt stock.  Found another with the milled reciever and the thumb hole rear stock, $650 otd.  Other price about the same.  Both in aprox 99% cond as far as I can tell.  I see pros and cons as to milled vs stamped.  Can I change the thumb hole stock on the milled with out too much trouble?  I know these questions have been asked 100s of times.  Thanks for the help

1mm stamped receivers are good, but milled are of course a bit better. Plus they are getting more rare as time goes on. But I hear you on swaping out the thumbhole stock for a standard full stock. Kvar has a nice blondwood furniture set for a milled receiver you could swap to when ready. And yes, changing it should only take 15-20 minutes. Many instructions floating around on the web  and forum.

You won't be able to just change out the furniture for legal reasons.  You'll have to add US made parts to make up for the evil features you want to add.  Changing out the FCG is really easy, ten minutes work.  The gas piston is a little more involved but still quite simple.

How many parts you need to replace will be dictated by what you're wanting to do to the rifle.  30 round mags I assume?

By the way, there's nothing wrong with a well made, stamped receiver AK.  It'll be easier finding parts and furniture for a stamped AK.

I prefer stamped receivers

The benefit of a milled receiver is perception only.

Chinese stamped rifles are not 1mm receivers.  They are thicker than that and the thickness is on the inside diameter of the receiver which means any K-VAR set for a stamped receiver is going to be more than an easy swap.  Lots of sanding or filing involved.

No K-VAR stock will likely fit easily in the Chinese milled receivers, I believe the rear of the receiver is very different than European for the attaching of the stock.  Some of the milled are angle cut.  Some have a plate welded at the back of the receiver, you wouldn't know what you have until the thumbhole stock is removed.  Most that get one of these use an Ironwood designs set to switch out the stock, unless the rifle is one with the underfolder rear block.

No Chinese MAK-90 is worth anywhere near $650.00.

The MAK-90 with the regular stockset, is it compliant with 922(r) by having the required numberof US parts in it?  Could be an illegal conversion and that lowers the value if you are going to put US parts into it to be compliant.

My bad.....922r compliance competely slipped my mind, and this is huge to stay legal.  I don't know how many US parts (if any) the Mak already has.  But I agree, the FCG, gas piston, muzzle device, and Ironwood furniture are the way to go, as I don't know if any of the US made polymer furniture will work.

Do you mean they want about $650.00 for a stamped MAK-90.  These are available for about $300.00 to $375.00 all day long.  If it is compliant with 922(r) and has the regular furniture then maybe a high value of $450.00 but before paying that I would make sure it has the proper number of US parts.

Milled MAK-90.  Going to cost you more to convert legally as you almost have to use the ironwood stockset.  $88-98 for the stockset alone.  Piston $15-20+   4 US parts minimum for a milled rifle.

That puts you over $750.00 for that milled MAK-90.

600 is way too much.  I love my mak 90,.. but i wouldnt have gt it for that when you can get alot of others for around 600-$700. I do believe the reciever is 1.5mm thick , thats the good thing about maks.    If you are going to get a stock set,.. I recommend iron wood designs as they have them for the mak90 and other tang cuts.  I got a walnut and stained it with linseed oil and the wood looks better than all my other rifles.

$350 for a stamped Mak90. Maybe $425-$450 for a milled. Mak is right, no K-Var stock set will fit a Chinese without sanding.

Mak90's aren't exactly easy to find at all these days. Can someone tell me where you find them for $300?

I already have one, and a Maadi, but I'd by another Mak in a second if I could find one for $300.

I saw them at the SAR show in Phoenix, I've seen them at Tucson gunshops, here on the equipment exchange.  If you see what I said above $300.00 to $375.00 all day long.  If you are a member here for any length of time you will see posts from members who find them for much less than what I have quoted.  Or you can go buy one for $650.00

Examples:

There is at least one on the EE right now for $349.00.  Pay any more than that and you enter the price of much better choices because of the extra money you have to spend to make them compliant with 922(r).  By the time you are done with conversion costs you can get a newly built Yugo underfolder.

Also, check out the AZ shooting board for possible local deals.
