Picked up a new WASR-10 at the gun show this weekend.  It had a rough bolt, but I've read that's common.  I dismantled it and cleaned out all of the cosmoline and have reassembled and lubed it.  However, the bolt hangs like crazy and will not close without assistance.  It stops about an inch before closing completely.  A good shove on the handle will close it.

-I am not riding the handle.  I pull it back and let it fly.
-I have oiled the rails, bolt, bolt carrier, back of the hammer, gas piston, recoil spring, and gas tube.  Depending on the spot, I used Hoppe's Oil, Breakfree, or Aerosol Lithium Grease swabbed with a Q-Tip.
-The gas block is not canted.
-I have manually cycled the action, with and without the recoil spring in place a good 4-5 dozen times.  It doesn't feel any smoother.

Thoughts?  I don't want to go to the range with a jam-o-matic.  Plus, Century monkeys didn't install the shepherd's hook correctly so I'm trying to get that fixed too so no range trips with loose trigger pins.  Thanks in advance!

Go shoot it. If it hangs up tap it foward. Use FMJ ammo and put at least 200 to 300rds through it. It will be fine just needs to wear in.

If you're pulling the bolt all the way back and releasing it and it still hangs up then I'd call century up.  My SLR-105 did the same thing when I first got it but only when riding the bolt closed.  It stopped after a couple hundred rounds.  You could try swapping out the FCG to a G2 and see if that helps or polish the FCG but it seems that you have bigger problems than that.  Does it hang up every time or just every now and then?

It hangs every time I pull the bolt back.  It looks like it might be hitting the dust cover, but it still does it with the dust cover off.  It came stock with the G2 group - probably why the shepherd's crook wasn't installed correctly.

And for something unrelated: redstar and tapco both want over $8 to ship the shepherd's hook retainer plate replacement.  Insane!!!

Take your trigger and hammer pins over to your local small hardware store and find "E" clips that will clip over them. Buy at least 2 for each pin and a couple spares they cost maybe $0.05 to $0.10 each. They replace the sheppards hook and retainer plate.

Sounds like the headspace is tight.  Remove the bolt from the carrier and move the bolt by hand.  Will the bolt rotate and lock up completly without force?  If it will, then scratch the tight headspace thought.  If it will not lock up, the barrel is just a little to far into the trunion.  Some guns will loosen up on their own, others will require the barrel to be moved forward a bit.  HTH

Use 7/32 E-Clip.  Looks like you need buffer.  It should fix it up.

drobs and jungp, thanks for the tip on the e-clips!

Blurted and TacticalOpsAR, bolt moves fine in the carrier and I don't notice any wear that seems abnormal.  I tried removing the piston and running the bolt and carrier in the receiver, worked much more smoothly.  I'm going to knock the retaining pins out of the gas chamber, loosen the gas tube, relube it, and see if that loosens it up a bit.  Thanks!
