| How many rounds could you reasonably expect to shoot from an AK before a barrel change would be needed? A friend and I were having an argument about this. He said only 15,000 rounds and I said that I'd heard 100,000. Who is closer? |
Your friend is closer, much closer. |

Well there is no straight up answer. There are a lot of variables bullet type, bullet weight, and bullet velocity. I’ve also read that running a brush up and down the barrel wears them out quicker then firing. You need a Throat Erosion and Muzzle Wear Gage to accurately check when you need a new barrel. Or when you start noticing your accuracy going down hill. |

Perhaps I'll just watch for my accuracy to take a hit before worrying about barrel replacement. I usually wrap my copper wire brush with a cleaning pad before running it through the barrel, so I should be good with that. Looking around elsewhere on the internet has yielded figures of 20-30K rounds, so I think I still have awhile. When the time comes, I have plenty of smiths to pick from... |
