I found a Norinco 56-2 today at a LGS.  It is a beauty!  I will post pics later.

My question pertains to the Importer stamping;

There are no Importer stamps at all on the receiver.

But, stamped on the barrel very small is, "IA CO. SACO, CA." and NORINCO, CHINA.

I thought all receivers were stamped?

They don't have to be marked on the receiver.  I have seen barrels and rear sight blocks.

My Chinese SKS is only marked on the barrel in small letters.
Maybe the regulations changed?

"IA CO. SACO, CA" is the importer's markings. Importer's markings are commonly found on the barrel.

Some imported AK's have the serial number on the trunnion only.

I bought a SKS new in the box in 1986 that has Kengs Firearm Specialites Smyrna,GA Made in China stamped on the barrel between the gas block and front sight in very tiny letters.
So apparently barrel stamping was a standard practice till the late 1980's.

I think they can still stamp the barrel, it just can't be hidden.  The Beretta 1934s that were imported a few years ago were barrel stamped.

Hopefully it's the 3 hole kind.
