According to the below linked operating manual, the numbers on the rear sight indicate meters. However, my newly bought post-ban Century Arms SAR-1 is numbered 1-10. Is this how they are all numbered? Sighting up to 10 meters doesn't seem like a very high maximum distance. I read somewhere these guns have a much higher effective range. Am I mistaken about what the Operating Manual says or am I just supposed to compensate after 10 meters?

1 = 100 meters
10 = 1000 meters

Those are meters?  I thought they were miles!    I am reminded of the guitarist on Spinal Tap, whose volume knob went to '11'...

From what I've read, the effective range of an AK is 300 meters.  The '10' setting is optimistic.  I know the rear sights on VEPRs are only graduated out to 300 meters, or '3' on the sight.

The higher settings are for suppressive fire at long range. I don't think anyone expects an AK to reliably hit targets past about 400m. As for the Russian guns only being marked to 300, that' s part of some weird export restriction.
