I'm in the process of looking for an AK in 7.62.  I've played with an Arsenal M-7 underfolder, a SSR-82, and a AMD-65 on a Global receiver (vector build I think).  I have owned a WASR and a Yugo M70AB-2 but didn't like either.  I liked the Arsenal with the milled receiver and underfolding stock, but I think they're capitalizing on the fact that they're discontinued because the price was $1199.  I liked the SSR-82 and that's an option as well.  I didn't like the AMD...stock didn't work for me.  Is the Arsenal a better buy with the milled receiver?

Milled receiver vs. stamped. Only a question of preference. Both will last just about forever.

Arsenals are questionably the best factory made AKs out there today, but I wouldn't say that offering milled receivers gives them that distinction. As LUGERMAN said, choosing a milled receiver over a stamped one is a question of preference. Personally, I have zero interest in milled receivers. Sure they are cool looking, but they're also something like 2lbs heavier and offer *very* questionable benefits in terms of accuracy and durability. Remeber that AKs were always meant to be stamped, and that the milled receivers were used briefly only because the technology to produce stamped versions hadn't been perfected yet. Once that technology was perfected, the Soviets promptly returned to stamped AKs with the AKM varients. It was the stamped AKM that went on to give AKs their legendary reputation for reliability. IMHO, the only real reason to own a milled receiver is if you like the look of them, and if that's the case go right ahead. The extra weight is just a deal breaker for me......

Anyway, you can never really go wrong with an Arsenal, whether it be stamped or milled.

Milled is better for sure, but stamped is fine too. For the money, I just can't bring myself to purchase a milled over a stamped when I know that at the range I will never notice any difference.

What's an SSR-82?  Are you talking about the SSR-85C2 from Armory/Global Trades?

Go with a Lancaster AKM 47RM or RS...or, Vector Classic.  Can't go wrong with either in construction, reliability or price

Yes I do mean SSR85.... I dont' like the gray vector finish.  I haven't looked too much into the Lancaster but I think this time I'm going to buy local this time around.  If I go for a lower cost AK instead of a Arsenal what else should I get?  I have about $2000 to play with.

Have you considered a fixed stock AMD or a Sar1?

Ended up picking up a SAS-7 Underfolder and a SAM-7 SF...both milled Arsenals.  I'll decide which one I like and sell off the other.

My guess is you will keep the side folder.
