Hey guys, I posted several weeks about about wanting to purchase a mak90.Well I finally hit a big gunshow in hopes of buying one. I've never acutally shot one before, only SKS's. Anyway I found lots but to my sadness, I am so big I cannot even get it up to my shoulder. Is there anything that can be done? I'm 6'3 270lbs bodybuilder build. I felt like I was handling a toy gun and couldn't even begin to get my chin on the gun to aim it. Some guy mentioned they make butt spacers to extend the stock a little but I'm thinking I'm needing like 3-4inchs easily just to feel comfortable with the gun. I did pick up one mak90 armco and it was the sporter model, wasn't quite as short but still a problem. ALSO are the prices on AK's high as hell right now or something? The mak90 I wanted to buy the guy wanted $475 and wouldnt budge!!!!!!! Also they had new century arms ak47s and wanted $410!!!!!!! Am I missing something here? I thought ak47s were 300-350 tops. I acutally didn't see all that many AK47s more ar15s then anything, shit loads of them. Any help is appreciated. HOOSIERfire |

Where to start. OK, #1 450$ for a MAK-90 is a fair price for a MAK-90 from a dealer. ALL AK's are very expensive as are ALL guns. But the quality has improved greatly. Most are now in the 600 to 850 dollar range but they are NIB. They are also excellent quality, a lot better than romanians or Egyptian. #2 as for your gun fitting, thats up to you. There are butt extensions you can put on them. There are also two lengths called "warsaw" and "nato". The NATO length is much longer but the way you describe it even that might not be long enough, so also look into generic stock extensions that you can slip over the end. The only think i can think of is get an AK and measure the length. Then Estimate how much more you would need for you to be comfortable with it. Then order a stock online and ask for its dimensions before you order it. Always make sure that the new stock will fit your AK since not all AK parts are compatiable with every AK. If you decide to get a MAK-90 fitting a stock might be tricky IF the reciever is milled so also find out what reciever you have. |
| I know guns are expensive I own several Kimbers. I just asked on this board what the going rate for a mak90 was several weeks ago and was told anything over $400 = not worth your time. Thats what I was a bit freaked at $475 and he wouldn't deal on the price. I'll look into a butt extender |

I find the standard Warsaw Pact length stock far too short for me (6'4", 290). I use US made furniture in US lengths and that usually solves the problem. AK's usually have stocks appropriate for use over winter clothes, or for average size asian males. Ace also sells a number of different length tube stocks, both fixed and folding. I've used their longest length folder with great success. |
If thats what they are selling it for, id find one for $100 less from an individual. $450 is too high for a MAK-90 IMHO. Shop around...
Name a poor quality AK that is still being built, that is better now, than it was before. "Expensive, as are all guns??" Thats laughable... Not so...Ak are not expensive...Some are, but a good quality one can be had in the $350-400 range. Once again, shop around.
Here is a good one:MAADI for sale Arsenals, Vectors, and VEPR's fall in the range. Romanian "G" kit builds can be had for about $400 or so. The Romanians (NOT WASRS) are very good quality. I would put my romanian build up quality wise against anything else in the same price range. Look around the EE on this board and the other AK boards to see what is out there. My guess is that you will find one for a better price. The Egyptian guns are good quality also. The MAADI guns are excellent quality, especially if you are interested in a true to life Russian copy. These guns were built on Russian machinery that was sold to Egypt to build guns. The MISR version were not as good, but are serviceable if you de-bug them properly. I woulld rate the MISR guns better than i would a WASR.
Much longer? Try about an inch or so over a Warsaw pact length stock. Make sure that you get the right stock for your receiver. If you have a slant cut milled stock, you may have to go with a custom stock from Ironwood. Hope you find a good one! KyAKGuy |

$450.00 is to high for a MAK-90. The thumbhole stock seems shorter to me then a regular stock. If you need a longer stock find a good AK with the right type of receiver and put the Nato length stock on it. Check out prices on the Equipment Exchange. I get good deals at gunshows most of the time but there are always dealers who are really proud of their guns. Shop around. Get a WASR at the right price for your first one and put the longer stock on it. You can always sell it when you want to upgrade if the rifles aren't banned in a couple of months. I have never owned a WASR myself though but there is nothing wrong with a SAR if you check it for canted FSB or gas block. The first SAR-1 I ever bought I still own though I have sold 2 others. I've been trying to get one guy who bought one and shot it once to sell it back to me. A great base rifle to improve upon. |

Hey guys and gals, Been a busy week but I just wanted to say thanks for all the replies. I really still want an AK, but I put an FN FAL imbel up to my shoulder last gun show and that sucker felt great. I only needed like MAYBE an inch to make it perfectly level. Is a century FN FAL any good? buddy's dad has one loves, it paid $600, the one I picked up was an imbel original though and the guy wanted 1450 and wouldn't budge one bit on the price. I had to pass. As for bodybuilding, we're talking national level bodybuilding 20" arms 270lbs type bodybuilding :) It was just a hobby that became an obsession, now i can finally afford guns again and they are becoming an obsession. If I get an AK I will definetly have to get a custom setup. Cheers HOOSIERfire |

Glad you are getting good info. Some Century FALs are good, some are not, and some guns are just built by 'whomever' on one of their receivers. IMHO find a build mentor in the IN HTF, get an Imbel kit from dansammo.com (expect like-new inside just marched heavily) and source a receiver. There is a FAL forum in Arms & Tactics. PS- price and availability of .308 goes up/down much more than x39 calibers and 5.56 over the last 5 years, but it's all part of getting what you want ![]() |
