I bought this a few weeks ago.  I added a Romanian folding stock and a Red Star Arms SAR-3 hammer.  The addition of the new hammer caused it to be a single stage trigger.  I reworked the disconnector for trigger slap and to bring back the 2-stage trigger: now its very smooth.  I took it to the range today and shot 100 rounds of Barnaul 62 grain FMJ through it, using both Weiger and bakewhatever mags.  No malfunctions of any kind.  I was actually able to hit a 12" steel plate 25% (1:4 shots) at 300 yards, using those lousy sights.

This is a hoot to shoot!

Muzzle flash was a hoot too.  I am not adding a muzzle device.  I like the flash.  It has less recoil than my lightweight CAR-15.

I am still deciding which handguard to use.  Both look good to me.

This sure is much less costly than another AR-15!

The flash is a neat toy, by accident learn tha with the AK pistols. Not only is the flash better the sound and thump that goes with it is better too.

Thanks for the report.  How does that folding stock work for you?  You can't get a stock weld with it - can you?

BTW - I like the pistol grip handguard because it keeps your hand away from the heat if you really heat up the barrel.

Is this your first AK?  If so, welcome to the darkside!

Looks like a nice rifle and I love the romy-style forward grip.  That would get my vote.

Nice gun and range report .  My first SAR 3 shot so good I recently picked up another one.

Both of mine have the Romanian push button side folder which is very comfortable to shoot with. Due to the .223 chambering as my friends WASR with the same stock gets uncomfortable after a few clips.

I recently installed the Red Star hammer in both just as a precaution.

A very viable alternative to the Arsenal .223 rifles for a lot less coin.

Good report............They are fun rifles..........and likely to be collectibles too........Have you tried any 5.56 X 45 ammo through it yet ???

ATL Fireman,

Can you get a cheek weld with that type of stock?

I have the same Romy folder on a WASR and the weld is pretty good. I have fairly short arms so I dont have to cramp myself to get a decent line of sight. I may switch it over to the SAR3.

MDN,

Is your stock slightly offset or completely straight off the receiver?  Lever or button?  Thanks!

Several have used paracord wrap to soften the steel/jaw, and not too bulky to use the safety folded.

They both are push-buttons and straight off receiver.

I really can't get much of a cheek weld with the folding stock, but good enough to get a sight picture.
