Guys, I just ordered the UltiMAK AK Modular Rail Forend System (Model# ACR2-SL) and the UltiMAK AK-47 Optics Mount (style 2) with side gas ports (Model# M2-B) for my new Global Trades/Armory USA SSR-85C-2 (blk furniture). The stuff should be here around Monday of next week. How does one remove the handguard. I know it requires rotation of the pin, but how far does it need to rotate? What should happen after that?

you rotate it to the verticle position, try taping the handguard forward and it should come loose

When you remove/install the old/new upper, a helpful thing is to squirt a little WD-40 or Breakfree CLP or any type of lubricating oil into the cracks of the semicircles of the metal upper handguard retainers (where the wood meets the metal semicircles).  This will help in the smooth removal/installation of old/new upper so as not to damage or crack the old/new upper. Now take off the upper gas tube w/ upper attached, off the rifle. Next I take either a regular plyers or vice-grip with duct tape over the threads and hold the gas tube w/ upper firmly by the end of the metal gas tube with one hand. With the other hand, grasp the upper firmly with a regular grip and turn the upper 180 degrees either way - the upper will now come off very easily. Lastly I squirt a little lubrication on the ends of the new upper and install by the exact reverse of the removal steps.

I just put all new blonde Bulgarian wood on an AK. Another little tip is to squeeze the upper handguard as you rotate it around the gas tube. The retainer clip inside there can make it tough to rotate otherwise.

I will not have to worry about the guard on the gas tube. The UltiMAK AK-47 Optics Mount (style 2) with side gas ports (Model# M2-B) replaces the entire assembly. The lower handguard was my only concern. Thanks for the tips.

Well guys, all of your tips paid off. I managed to get done with the handguard thing this afternoon. Now when UltiMAK stuff gets here next week, I WILL BE READY! Thanks again.

I can't get the little lever to turn up using my Leatherman tool on my Yugo underfolder.  I've tried saturating it in lube.  Any recomendations?  Also, how does one remove the wood from the gas tube?  Please excuse my ignorance, as I am fairly new to the dark side.

I am looking foward to the pictures of the ultimak lower and upper rail installed. I imagine that these upgrades will add a lot of weight to the rifle. Is this case?

Thanks,

Hey, that is a good link. I hadn't tried to remove mine yet. I thought I was gonna have to drill out a rivet or something.

The buttsock removal was the worst, I had to bang the stock on a carpeted floor for about a half hour before I saw movement, I had to hit the floor hard but it did nothing to the buttstock.
