Hey guys,

I'm new to the site and to the AK world, as this is my first AK rifle in a pretty well rounded gun collection.

I recently picked up a Post-Ban Maadi ARM.  So far I've just field stripped it and gave it a good cleaning.  I haven't gotten a chance to take it to the range yet (work schedule).

I am satisfied with the fit/finish of this weapon in contrast to some of the other AK's I've seen/held in the past.

However, I do have 2 questions about this rifle maybe you guys could answer for me.

First, are these rifles supposed to have last shot bolt-hold-open???  I know my SKS does and I was kind of hoping this rifle would too.  But, the bolt/carrier doesn't want to stay rearward with a empty mag in the well.

Secondly, being a post-ban rifle, it comes with a nut tack-welded to the muzzle threads.  Now a flash suppressor isn't legal in my state, but a muzzle brake is.  I'm wondering how difficult it would it be to remove this useless nut and screw on a slant brake???

Any info or comments appreciated...

Thanx.

Congrats,

Your ARM doesn't have a bolt-hold-open. Just like all the AKMs out there.

The welding can be taken out with a Dremel in about 5 min.

Ditto on ShiningPath's comments. Just be aware that by removing the muzzle nut, you are probably going to enter the realm of 922r and compliance parts. I have 2 Maadis and a MAK-90, and all are fun. While the MAK looks better, my 1st Maadi will stay with me for a very long time.

Thanx for the info/replies guys...

dar48,

I was thinking of putting on an American made slant brake in place of the muzzle nut.  This should be 922r ok, yes?

Or what if I replace the "Bunghole" stock with a US made Nato or WARSAW style stock/pistol grip.  And then attach a foreign brake...  Would that also be compliant???

If you remove the thumbhole stock, you're going to need 6 US parts.  Below are some pics of my 1993 Maadi ARM.  The US parts I used were FCG (3), US Slant Muzzle Brake (1), Gas Piston (1) and US Mag Follower (1).

tapeo1,

Thanks for the info.

I'm definitely going to make the changes to my Maadi after seeing how yours came out.

That is one sweet rifle...

I bought the pistol grip many many moons ago... I think it was back in 1994 soon after I bought the rifle.  It's a real Soviet bakelite PG.  Not sure where to find them now though.

I picked up the furniture one piece at a time off the equipment exchange.  It's real Soviet wood.

BTW, a few years ago, I sandblasted off the old finish and refinished with black semi-gloss MolyResin.

Another alternative for compliance is to use the following parts:
1) US fire control group (there are three parts)
2) US muzzle brake
3) US buttstock and handguards from www.ironwooddesigns.com (count as two parts)
That will give you six parts.  The advantage of doing it this way is that you use a foreign pistol grip and you won't have to worry about having a US part in your magazines.
