I purchased this a couple of months ago from buddy of mine that needed some cash. I got a pretty good deal on it, and it came with 6 Weiger mags. When I got it, I had in mind what I wanted to do. I had some handguards that I had used the black truck bed paint on, and a Romy folding stock on a SAR2 that I wanted to take off.

So, I refinished the SAR3 this weekend in Norrel's moly resin, added a bird cage brake, stuck the handguards and the stock on it, did some work on the FCG, added a SAW grip, put a Romy leather sling on it, and here it is.

It really did not turn out as cool looking as I'd hoped. Now, I'm thinking about throwing some of these handguards on it with a red dot. I may also add a black sling.

I'm not worried about keeping it looking original. I've got several other AK's including another SAR3 that all have the original AK look.

I just wanted to get some thoughts on my latest project. Thanks for looking.

I'm a SAR 3 fan, they are a hell of a lot of fun, I think it came out good, although I'm not a big fan of US FS on AK's.  I would go with a Russian Kobra  "DOT" sight, the SAR3 already has the side rail. That would be slick.  My 2 cents.  Looks good brother.

Looks real nice!!! I also have two SAR 3's and I plan on doing the same thing with both of them.  That is keep one orginal and add the Romy Front Sight with 22MM brake and the other put black furniture on with a folding stock.  But I was thing of putting this on.  BTW what  threads did you use on your barrel?  I hear that SAR 3 barrels don't have enough meat on them for a normal AK thread and it may be better to use the AR15 thread. Also did you use the REDSTAR SAR3 hammer?

I put AR threads on both my SAR3's. (I used the threading kit that you can rent on the EE, worked great!) There was not enough barrel material to use regualar AK threads. I am going to put this on my other SAR3. It has all Polish wood and is really nice.   Brake

On this gun, I did the hammer myelf. I have the RSA hammer in my other one, so I used it as a template.

I like the Vortex. I tried to put a 3 prong on it, but it did not have enough threads to get close enough to the front sight tower.

Thanks for checking it out.

Looks good to me!

That's what is great about AK's . .you can customize them to your own taste.

Here is my NIB/Refinished SAR-3

I had the entire rifle refinished the way I wanted it to be.

Again..your SAR-3 looks great anykey!

Anykey,

When you say you put a 3 prong on and it didn't enough threads to make it the front sight, are you saying that you tried a Smith Enterprise Vortex?  Because if you did this will make me rethink on what kind F/S I want to use.  And with the Smith Vortex being about $50 it's nice to know ahead of time.

JorgWalther,

That's a nice Sar too.  Mind me asking what muzzle break you are using?  That pistol grip looks like the one gunparts guy is selling.  I love when you guys show your rifles because it gives the rest of us ideas!!!!!!

I tried a DPMS 3 prong AR FH, kind of a poor man's Vortex. I have no idea if the Vortex will go all the way to the sight base. I will say that on this one, I had to use 2 crush washers to get it to work. I used one of the old style with the split, and one of the new ones. It sounds cheesy, but it actually turned out looking pretty decent. When I did the refinish job, I went ahead and finished the crush washers and the FH while they were on the barrel so everything would be a consistent color. It helped "hide" the fact that there are 2 washers on there.

I'm going to try to get a better pic of it. I suck at taking digital photos. I can never get that incredible detail that alot of folks seemt o be able to get. I don't know if it's lighting, the quality of my camera. or my pic-fu. Probably some of each!

NICE! I like the FH you have on there. Did you replace the sight base with an original Romy with the threads, or just thread the barrel?

I like them looking original..

This is mine with a AKUSA brake, romy FSB and AK74 Russian Laminate refinished by Zrecto. AKUSA also reblued it when he installed the FSB. I have added a Russian grip on this since taking this photo and am running a Grasshopper AK74 made in USA follower in the mag.

There is nothing like throwing $600.00 into a $400 gun!

I think they all look pretty good, although I've never been excited about the SAW grips personally.  Mine has been through a couple of phases now.  The furniture is US plum-flavored.

What kind of optics do you have on there? I'm trying to figure out what I want to do on optics.

It's a PK-AV.  I got it from Tantal.  I can't tell you how it performs, as I just got it this week.  I should know more after this weekend.

He might quote you a different price based on market value, so I can only tell you what I paid (~$155).  Freedom Optics lists the same sight for a similar price.  I would have ordered from them, but their website is buggered, and they never responded to my email.  I won't bother trying to contact them again, which is a shame.

I would definately like to hear how that works out. So, we can hope for a range report sometime next week?

Anykey, nice looking SAR.

How do the handguards hold up to the heat and handling?

I put some of the spray on bed liner stuff on my CETME beat up wood.

It flaked here and there (little spots), I may not have prepped the surface correctly.

I have an SAR1 with the Romy side folder on it and love the compactness.

Thanks for sharing!

I'm not sure on the handguards, I have not shot it yet, but I plan to remedy that on Monday. I like the side folder too, and the paracord wrap made a big difference on the comfort of the cheek weld. I actually took the folder off my SAR2 and have shot it since I did the paracord wrap. Thats a good cheap upgrade.

Here is another pic. I'm trying to figure out how to take good digital pics, but it's a slow learing process for me.

Here is a pic of my other one that has the Polish furniture on it. I also refinished it with Norrels molyresin. It has the RSA hammer also. It it an awesome shooter. I need to put the brake on it. I threaded this one when I did the other one and am waiting on some funds to purchase the brake.

Here's mine.....

K-var stock set, RSA Trigger group, '74 brake, reworked and refinshed by InRange. I have a black Bulgarian sling, cleaning kit in the butt stock along with 10 OD and 10 clear Bulgarian mags hand fitted to work flawlessly and 10 German mags. One of my favorite AKs.

VERY nice. I really like the stock set. How do you "hand fit" Bulgy mags to work in the SAR3? I'd love to have a couple of 20 round mags for the folder.

You hand fit them by knocking a bit off of the mags feed shoulders so it feeds the rounds a bit lower.  Stock Bulgy mags tends to feed the rounds above the chamber.

What tap did you use and where did you get it?

When I bought my SAR3 it came with a converted Bulgy mag that I didn't know had been converted.  I used it with my Bulgy M5 several times without realizing someone had rounded off the shoulders a bit to all the mag to fit in the SAR3 magwell.  So now I have a mag that works well with both rifles.  :)

I used the same tap as the AR15 size threads, can't remember the pich off the top of my head, 1/2 x 28? I rented the kit from wjm on the EE. (I still have it as a matter of fact, waiting to send it to his next customer) My buddy and I did both my SAR3's and my milled MAK90 in about 30 minutes. I got the set that had both size taps in it. It is really easy, and works like a charm.
