PUT THE DREMEL DOWN AND STEP AWAY FROM THE GUN!!! You DO NOT want to bevel the barrel... You risk having an area of unsupported brass. This can cause blown cases and all sorts of problems... On a pistol you can get away with it to a point...But not with rifle chambers and much higher pressures. I had the same problem with my .223 when i converted it. What i had to do was to run a bead of weld along the rear of the bullet guide to build it up a little higher so the bullet would kick up a little higher and enter the chamber cleanly. Once i had the weld on it and let it cool down (OUCH!!) i had to recontour (Dremel) the welded area so the bolt would close properly. Make sure the locking lugs dont hit the bullet guide when the bolt rotates to close. You will have to Dremel, and then test fit and feed. Work a little at a time adn you will get it to work properly. Make sure that the bolt will close while feeding a round. I had mine working great when empty, but when i loaded the mag and tried it, the locking lug hung on the bullet guide. Had to take it all apart and trim the guide till the bolt closed with a round. Let me know if you need some pics of mine and i will send them. Now i was using Weiger and Bulgy mags, so your feeding results may vary... KyARGuy |
My underfolder kit came with a beveled barrel. First time I see such configuration. Should I return it? It is Polish underfolder manufactured in 1984. Damn this buying on Internet. You don't know what you're getting. Should I be looking for a pimp who took the money and ran, SOB's do not respond to e-mails and do not answer or return calls. |

Looking at my .223 Saiga, it does have a very slight Bevel to the bottom of the barrel. I would call it a bevel. It is so slight, i doubt it was done to aid in any type of feeding. It is actually more like a "chamfer." I would not recomend increasing the "bevel" to a point where you actually "ramp" the barrel to improve the feeding characteristics. That is where you will create problems with unsupported brass and case blown cases at the weak point at the rear of the case, ahead of the web. It is much easier to recontour the easily replaced bullet guide rather than mess up a barrel because you ramped it to make it feed. I am only talking of the .223 SAIGA , not the 7.62x39. In looking at a few of my 7.63 guns the amount of bevel varies quite a bit between the origins. My Arsenal SA-93 has the most bevel of any of them. I dont think you need worry about kits being bad. The Saiga .223 conversions are a little pickier in feeding than the 7.62x39 is. Sorry for the confusion KyAKGuy ETA: Just looked at my PMKMS UF and it has a Small ramped portion of the barrel.... Shoots fine, im not going to worry about it... |
The 1979 AKMS kit has no barrel ramp. 1984 kit has a barrel ramp, about 1/8 inch at the longest dimension. Maybe Radom (Lucznik) changed the design. Otherwise the set is pristine, all matching numbers stamped on front trunion, bolt carrier, bolt, sight, top cover, recoil spring guide, and the gas tube. The only thing that is shitty is the rear trunion, some old stamped and welded pullout. Don't know who makes such trunions. (Romanians? ... infamous for inferior workmanship) This should be no issue if I can get U.S. made. Presumably Global Trades and AA-OK carries those. I'm having difficulty contacting these outlets. They do not answer phone or e-mail. Some service! |
| I only Dremeled a tiny place on the barrel. I appreciate the concern and understand your comments. Please explain to me why my Sar-3 in 5.56 X 45 has a rather deep bevel in it and it does not explode ??? I will modify the bullet guide as you suggest.....Just curious how some rifles have a "bullet ramp" in them and they don't cause trouble. Thanks....Mike |
| I dremeled a small bevel on the lower right side of the chamber on my 7.62x39 Saiga and have had no problems. Put 100 rounds of steel case and 30 rounds of SA brass case through it. The brass cases show just a tiny bit of forming into the bevel while the steel shows none. I can take some pics of the spent brass and post them, if I can figure out how to. Probably be easier to email them to someone to host. |
