All -

Thanks for your help with the Ak rifle questions, now I was wondering what the story was with the drum magazines.  I have the following questions:

(1) Are the drums actually functional/reliable (I know that most people use the AR drums as novelty items - but do not consider them reliable),

(2) what are the preferred manufacturers/countries of origin;

(3) what is the reasonable price range; and

(4) is there someone that stocks the good ones.

Thanks,
Adam

My Chinese and Romanian drums have been 100% reliable.  I've got a couple of Chinese drums that I've been using since the late 80's that still work perfectly after many, many range trips.

I prefer the Chinese drums for ease of loading.  Just open the back of the drum, drop in your ammo, close it and wind it up.    Loading the Romanian drums gets tiresome after a while.

You can find Romanian drums in the $60 - $80 range.  I haven't bought any Chinese drums in a while, but they usually command a premium over the Romo's.  $100+

I've got a Chinese 100 rounder that has worked flawlessly for me after I learned to load it right.

Use a LULA to load drums.  I've got Romanian that work just fine, and actually enjoyable with a LULA.  Going rate on the Romanian drums is around $80 or so.  Sometimes you can get them cheaper, other times some people want over $100 for them.

The Chicom (Chinese) drums are far superior to Romy drums IMO. Easier loading, and you can actually keep them loaded without wearing out the spring. The Romys, once you load them, the tension sets on the spring. They top-load just like any other AK mag. The Chinese have a door on the rear that allows you to load it, and just wind the spring when you're ready to shoot.

With my experience, both are very reliable.

Romy drums can be had for $75-$80 and sometimes $90 lately. Chicom 75rnd drums I've seen for as much as $180, and as low as $120.

Cope's has Chicom drums for $174.99 at the moment. Also, check on gunbroker.com, as Chinese and Romy drums appear there pretty often.
