Hi,,, I want to PURCHASE(can't build) an AK clone that someday will be an SBR,, not unlike the AK104. I like the AK-104, 7.62x39, cheap ammo, east eu scope mount base, right size. but i don't like the stock and the ones I've seen don't have the mag dimple?? plus most are over my budget.. My quandary is costs and effort to get the form 1.. 1)S0,, I am thinking buy ANY ak clone or pre-ban as cheap as possible,, maybe under 300$US,, while waiting add/alter folding stock,, red dot & mount,, etc,, etc.. After the SBR forms arrive,, have barrel chopped and threaded to 14", get flash suppression and someday can.. 2)OR Buy a AK 14" pistole,, apply for form 1,, add stock later.. Maybe 600$US My current over sized SBR is an old Ruger RS .44 carbine,, w/ammo band on stock that holds 18 rounds,, for reference. Likes,, or thing I'm looking for - 14" barrel,, not to short, should contain most of the power burn w/popper flash suppression. - 20 round mags,, so you can fire from prone position - simple optics,, we are talking living room distance targets... - a shortened wood stock,, it's an sbr but I can still shoulder it for popp'n - or under folder as an alternative, - or ??,, I don't want the folder to mess w/the scope mount - I like the Romanian vertical foregrip - dimples frame,, for mag well - AK-104 style front sight integrated with gas block - I like wood furniture,, just because... I know it's heavy & out of style.. If the budget was unlimited,, I would be in line for one of the new Robinson Armament XCR's, in the new nato ammo standard 6.5x45 cal.. or 6.8 grendel.. http://members2.clubphoto.com/_cgi-bin/getImage.pl?imgID=58581014-5369&trans= NO 5.56x45, 2 small, 2 week, 2 ...(add whatever)... As this is new 1st post,, tell Lucy I'll buy the 1st round... Oh,, and I do accept suggestions and polite criticism... hanks JJ An Old Parrot Head, In The Conch Republic, Just South of Reality PS: to the mod's,, how about a nice AMERICAN flag at full mast??? |

Thanks for the reply,, Interesting point,, 14" barrel what do you expect of the ammo?? Do you know of any side by side krinkov test with the 7.62 vs 5.56 vs 5.45?? As 5.56x45 ammo is somewhat cheaper,, maybe I should be more open minded?? Although one of the reasons for choosing 7.62x39 was the ability to use the weaponed hunting,, BUT again,, a 14" barrel??? Probably not one of my more lucid mounts... TX JJ |

I don’t hunt, but I imagine that an AK is about one of the worst rifles to hunt with. I do expect that all three of those calibers in any barrel length will kill tin cans in a rock pit well. As for the calibers, here’s how I see it. the AK is a com-block weapon. The 7.62x39 and 5.45x39 are com-block cartridges, the 5.56 is not. Just me, but I think an AK should be chambered "properly." |

Well, you know what they say about chambers,, just stuff som'n in,, and it go ka-boom.. The 7.62x39 is actually not a bad hunting round,, It ranks right in therewith the old work horse(s) 30.30, .35 rem, .32 rem , perfectly acceptable for hogs, deer, and anything else you can hit under say 300 lbs,, at moderate ranges,, say under 150 yds.. And the AK can be every bits as good as a Winchester or Marlin.. It is not a tack driver,, but I suspect that most well made weapons can group under 5 MOA at 100yds.. add optics,, maybe a lot better.. JJ |

I'll chime in . . . I built my SBR -- OOW receiver, AMD-65 barrel (12 inch), Russian side-folder stock and Bulgy furniture. Sent Uncle Sam his $200 fee and had my "stamp" back to me in 113 days. Worth EVERY dime ! ! Anyway . . . as for velocity of the 7.62 round: Across my chrony Wolf will go about 2200 fps, Yugo M-67 is at 2250 and Barnaul travels at 2,350 -- from a 12 inch barrel ! And . . . from the prone position I can keep all shots on a 10-inch target at 200 yards. Not "match grade" but sure don't want to be standing in front of this thing ! ! ! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
