Does anyone have anything to say about this firm and it's products? Good, bad or indifferent... |
I know nothing about Chris Butler or AK-103.com...thanks for the info. The only hands on experiance I've had with AK's was mandatory training with them in the Army. I'm assuming that since he requests that you call for pricing, he's a bit higher than the average AK builder. |

I bought one (my very first and so far only AK) from him about three years ago. Back then the prices were posted on the website and were much lower than $1100. Well at least it was for the AK-103 that i ordered. So far, it has worked flawlessly. The one and only thing i didn't really much care fo was the bolt catch. Its location hangs down on the right side of the trigger and your trigger finger(assuming you're right handed), rubs at it which gets annoying after a while. i just took a dremel to it and made it a bit shorter and it's now out of the way. Anyways, i feel it is a quality rifle and am quite happy with it as well as the service with Chris Butler. |
Lugerman, What kind of details did he put into your Krinks, that would justify the $1100+? BerlinVet, When were you there? I was with B Co 4/502d 89-90, then C Co 6/502d 92-94. |
Fit, finish and function are all perfect. Finish duplicates as close as possible to the original Russian finish. Not some cheap park job or spray paint. Headspaced correctly. Attention to detail is supurb. Rivets are perfectly formed. No short cuts are used in the build process. They run with zreo problems and are very pleasing to the eye. I had no hesitation on the price at all after hearing of his reputation. He is currently building an AMD-65 and 63 for me. |
Last I heard InRange is not taking any work right now. |
I'd say that with the buying frenzy on kits last year that probably all of the AK smiths are backlogged somewhat. Lucky me though -- my kit is at In Range right now. |

AK-103 = excellent rifles. There is a huge difference in the quality available in the AK family of rifles. You can get a $239 Romainan SAR that you may have problems getting mags in and out of, bent front sight posts, etc or you can pay some $$$$ and get a rifle that is not only asthetically pleasing, but runs 100% of the time, guaranteed. God forbid if you ever NEEDED it to work and it didn't. Another good AK builder who is also a ARFcom member (dinkydow) is Wellco Arms in OH. I know he sells on GunBroker. I have had several Wellco built AKs (47s, 74, AMDs, etc) and all have been very good rifles that I would trust my life with. |
I have no personal experience with Chris' builds, and all the photos I've seen of them are beautiful. But there was someone on this very board who complained about a build they'd had done by Chris. As far as I can recall, it is the only complaint I have seen, and I cannot remember who the unsatisfied customer was. |

If someone had a problem, I guarantee you Chris took care of it. The guy's such a perfectionist that he'd probably freak out at the thought of something of his being considered "less than perfect." If the unsatisfied customer in question happens to read this, please let us know about the problem and it's resolution (or lack thereof). |
