I'm considering buying a Saiga 7.62 sporter. The only thing I'd like is to be able to use standard AK mags. Don't care about pistol grip, etc. Is there any easy way to have a reliable setup with standard AK mags without the extensive bullet guide mods, etc? Thanks

I've seen mags that a guy TIG welded the front lip up higher to act as a feed ramp( look at a factory saiga mag and you'll see why) or run a screw down into the front lip to serve the same purpose. Then you could dremel the back of the magazine where the mag catch engages it. You can mod the mags and not the rifle.

The bullet guide mod is not complicated.

I made a bullet guide out of pipe and paid my gunsmith to install it for me. Cost was $25. Just be aware that it is illegal to use high capacity mags in a Saiga without using 5 US made parts. Thats why most people do the pistol grip conversion. The US parts on a converted rifle are usually the buttstock, pistol grip and fire control group. I will be converting a .223 Saiga when my parts and rifle gets here next weekend........

If you read the law is says that you can have all the evil features so long as the mag is non-detachable (SKS for example) But the detachable mag is what calls all the other ones into play. Sucks huh?
