My home build works fine.  What I don't like is that the mag is a little loose (like many I've seen) and wags from side to side after a shot.

It is not as bad without the slant muzzle brake.

Will the AK74 give a more straight back compensation?

Is there a proven method to make the mags fit a little tigher without giving up functionality?

Thanks!

You can spot weld in small metal plates behind the dimples to act as a mag guide, and mill them down until they are quite thin and you can tightly fit a mag in place.  Assuming you have the welder and mill of course.

Or you can try Bulgarian Waffles. They fit tighter.

That's it, a wider mag.

I have some of the Centerfire bolt-hold-open and they fit very tight.  It looks like I need a 1.030 wide mag to fit tight.  Most of mine are about 1.010 or less.  I didn't realize they varied so much.

Installing a tighter mag and removing the slant-cut muzzle brake really helped.  ALMOST straight up recoil and very little of the torque action that I had experienced before.

This mag-wag phenomenon is really a detriment to fast follow up shots in tactical rifle/3 gun matchs.

Does the AK74 style brake work well?  Any recommended brands?

Thanks!

I haven't tried a '74 style threaded in 1x14 that I like. Actually, I like the slant compensator.

My favorite is an AMD 65 brake.  No muzzle rise!

My 1x14/LH 74' brake performs flawlessly. A great contrast from the old slant brake. From my experience, this brake does cause the rifle to kick straight back. Very comfortable.
