how difficult is the conversion?  im finding 7.62x 39 saigas for crazy cheap, like $200, but i would want it in the traditional format.
is this something a non-smithy could do?

if not, what would the conversion cost me for a smith to do?

A basic PG conversion is within the reac of most people who are at all mechanically inclined. Some of the more advanced conversions may require the services of a smith, for all but the most experienced DIYers.

it's not worth it, you will spend the same amount of money, afer installing all the USA parts that you need. Just by a post ban romanian.

now, if you ar elooking for an ak in 223, 308, 410 12 gauge, a conversion is by far the cheapest (or only) route.

wouldnt 12 Ga. be a DD like the USAS12 and Striker(streetsweeper)?

Long as the barrell is 18'+ and it is not full auto no.

It is very much worth it.
You may spend a little more, but you will end up with a gun far superior to a Romanian.
Saiga rifle $200
G2 FCG $35
US gas piston $18 (If needed...)
US Stock and grip $45
PG Bolt and Nut   $6
Feed ramp <$5 with screw (Home build)
Looks like ive got about ~$315 bucks in it so far. Granted i didnt change the forend,
but i kind of like the longer non-conventional forend. I may change it at a later date.
I dont kow where you are going to find a  built synthetic stock Romy gun for that price
with a good finish on it and straight GB and FSB.
I have already done a .223,and have a 7.62 gun in the safe waiting to be done.
I say go for it. Email me if you have any other questions.

Not worth it? You cannot even compare the two!!!

A good Saiga conversion rocks. It's the closest thing to a real russian made AK that you can get. The conversions put out by AKUSA and Tromix are NICE and have much better maching and a nice cold hammer forged barrel.  They are way better than the Romanians. And yes, I have both.

Buy a Saiga (or two or three).

YES, they will take Bulgy Waffles.

For some reason i had to modify my mags so they would work in my version.
Once i figured it out it tool about 3 min with a file to do it.
It will also take modified Weigers. Not hard to do we you figure it out.
I guess you could cut on the trunnion to avoid the mag modifications,
but i figured it was safer to cut on the cheaper part.  (Mag body  v.s. Trunnion)
I have 14 mags for the .223 conversion. (4 Green 6 black and 4 weigers)
Don't forget you need to install a feed ramp in either calibers to feed properly.

I dont think you are tracking on what Im asking. I didnt ask if it would be a SBS or machine gun, I asked it it would be a destructive device. Most USAS12s and Strikers arent SBSs or machine guns either (the striker is a revolver!). Because it is not intended for "sporting use" (which basically means bird hunting), the ATF has ruled that the USAS12 and Striker are NOT COVERED BY THE EXEMPTION FOR SHOTGUNS UP TO 10 GUAGE! Im pretty sure that converting the shotgun to "non sporting" configuration would make it no longer fall under the exemption for "sporting use".

Larger than .50, not a "sporting" shotgun=destructive device.

the batfe has not yet declared the saiga 12 a DD, however, if 10 round magazines ever make it onto the market, it is a distinct possibility. Fortunately, only the 5 rounders are readily available. 8 rounders are $100 each, and the USA made ones are vapor ware

You can find a 7.62x39 romanian for around $350, with a threaded barrel and bayonet lug.

sure it's a LITTLE more, but there is no hassle. and you get to have the threaded barrle and bayo lug, unlike the saiga.

If you want to play, go for it, but I wouldn't do it to save money. And it  would still be like buying a $200 norinco  sks, and adding $200 worth of "taktical" gear to it, to try and turn it into an AK.

Most of the inherent inacuracy of an AK comes from the sheet metal receiver flexing, and lose fitting parts, a saiga may have a "better" barrle, but it will not be significantly more accurate than a normal ak.

IF you want to do it as a fun project, go for it, but it's not worth it based on "money savings" IMHO
