| If I buy the Global 1.6 receiver for my M92 build will the barrel trunion need to be narrowed, or do I need to go with the 1.0. |

Having just finished a 1.6mm build for a board member I can say unequivocally that the 1.6mm reciever is the biggest pain in the ass ever. Not just both trunions, but everything had to be hand fit, down to the safety selector switch (receiver is too thick for it to fit in without removing material). And milling down the trunions is an idiotic idea. First off, they are through hardened steel, so you need a serious endmill bit, plenty of lube, and plenty of patience or you risk hurting either the trunion or the bit. And you'd better be absolutely right on your measurements or you've ruined a serial numbered part of the kit. Secondly, lets think about what we are doing. If the receiver strength is so important, why is the trunion just held into it with three little rivets by design? On the other hand, if the strength of the front trunion wasn't that important, why would they have bothered to through-harden it? The trunion has to cradle the chamber of the barrel and hold it in place with only a 7mm pin while that barrel is subjected to the pressure of tens of thousands PSI-- why would you want to remove metal from that part and make it thinner just so you could have a thicker mounting place for the rivets to go? IMHO the 1.6 is a stupid idea and I'm charging people $100 more to do a 1.6 build than a 1.0 build. And I truly believe the 1.0 build is a better build in terms of engineering. When we took down the front trunion in equal measurement on each side we were shocked at how thin it was towards the back. There's just not that much material left. Here's pics of the build. www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=4&f=64&t=78547 |
| I thank you for the feedback, I thought I saw somewhere that the original receiver was 1.5 thus the reason for my question . I know now that I wont be going in that direction. Another question, OOW or Global? You all have a vast knowledge of gun smithing and I'm only half vast. |
