Here is my Maadi ARM with Russian wood. It has six US parts: mag follower and floor plate, brake and FCG.  It took me awhile to scrimp and save for it.  Enjoy!

Is the maadi a truer clone of the AKM?
11/3/2005 12:31:12 PM EDT
[#22]
That IS a sweet looking rifle. I was thinking of doing the EXACT same thing with my Maadi. But without the proper mag pouch I'll be sure to not post any pics!

Back in the late 50s,the Soviets set up a Factory in Egypt as part of a Military Aid program."Factory 54"produces an Egyptian version of the Soviet AKM,they were trained by the Russians and all of the tooling and equipment is Russian. Its really not accurate to refer to the Maadi as a "clone",its just a semi auto AKM.

Couple of questions for the AK gurus!

Q1: Considering the Maadi is an exact copy of a Russian AK why is it cheaper than a Russian AK?
Q2: What makes the Romanian SAR-1(Not Wasr) not an exact copy?
Q3: Is the Russian sling longer than the Romanian sling? I would like a longe sling than he Romanian one.

Thanks!

Russian AK sling, I have has about 16-18" more sling for adjustment compared to the Romanian adjusted to it's full length.

A1:The Maadi is cheaper than a Russian AKM,mainly because of avaliability due to import restrictions and the fact the Russians never made a semi AKM.
A2:The SAR1 is also a direct copy of the Romanian AKM,the Romanians, along with the other Eastern Bloc Satellite Countries, set up their own Factories and manufacturing processes. Some of which closely followed the Soviet pattern while others deviated.

Very nice rifle, however, and please correct me if am wrong anyone....last I heard, floor-plate and follower are considered as one (1) US part just like upper and lower HGs are just one (1) part that's why the SLR 105 has six US parts FCG (3) Stock set PG(1), stock (1) Upper and lower HG (1). Anyway, it's very nice and just in case I would replace the piston if mag and floor plate are 1 part. Of course this whole US parts thing is stupid as hell anyway but who am I to decide which law to obey.

No, according to the great list, follower and floorplates are separate pieces. HG consists of  upper and lower to count as one part, but mag parts are individual. Absolutely gorgeous rifle; I worked on mine and wished it turned out as nicely. Now I just have the RML to trade to someone who wants an RPK clone or Tabuk sniper clone.

Q2: The SAR-1 is close, but not exact. The Romanians copied an early AKM, but over the years started to improve it.. The SAR-1 mixes some 74 era improvments in the receiver area, scope rail, etc.. So its not as close as the Egyptians....

Thanks for the compliment.

Believe it or not, I bought it off of ebay pre-commie days for about $85 . The seller said it was Romanian and probably is do to the fact that it also came with a forward grip wood hand guard as well as the one that's in the picture. I don't like those forward grip handguards, but it looks as nice as the rest of the stock.
