Seriously, does anyone know a way to keep these things from rusting so fast.  Its not like I keep it in my trunk or in the garage or even in the basement. It is in a gun cabinet in the second story of my house and I have to clean surface rust off of it like once a week.  It shoots nice, its just that I cant keep the finish from rusting.  It hasnt pitted or anything because I clean it enough to remove the rust before it gets to that point.  And the rust is hard to see when it forms, you just see the orange on the rag after you wipe it with cleaner.  Plus there is some orange rust deposits in the fabric of the case I keep it in sometimes.  Do they all do this, or do I just have a lemon.  And if they are all like this then what can I do to make it so I can store it for longer than a week without having it covered in rust.  None of my other guns do this either.

Thats odd,I keep a Romy locked in the trunk of my Jeep and have several more in my safe with no problems. You may try to spray it with a good lube,I use G-96,or your best bet would be to paint it over the finish.I've seen great results from Dura Coat and even High Temp engine paints work good.

thanks... Do you think a coating of rem oil would help?

It can't hurt. The phosphate finish will probably soak it up.

Are you sure it IS rust?  Our SAR's carry enough reddish residue from the case neck and primer pocket sealer to have fooled me once.

oiling the outside metal IMO is great it even can hide scratches and make it look good

another possibility is the case you keep it in. I once stored a nice blued shotgun in a fabric case for several weeks, and when I took it out of the case, it was covered in rust. a little bit of moisture got into the case, and sealed it inside with the gun.

clean the areas with hoppe's or CLP. coat everything with a light coat of oil or CLP

dont keep it in a soft case, except when transporting

use silica (damp-rid, etc) inside your gun case

My Sar2 did the same thing, as well as my FPK/Romak 3.

Both are now well KRYLONIZED.........

Its not a true phosphate finish.  It looks a bit like it but the finish on a WASR is just oven paint, as you'll discover once you get the barrel nice and hot and it starts to peel off.  Same on the Century FALs, I thought I had a parkerized Century FAL until I started to rub grey paint off of it.

To toot my own horn, I'd refinish it in Norrell's Moly Resin for $100 in any color you'd like.  You pay shipping one way, I pay to ship it back to you.  IM me if interested.

use CLP on every inch of the gun,. and dont keep it in a case! cough up the $$ for a simple gun locker/cabnet toss in a discant and keep in a climate/humitdy controled area

or just keep your toys in a cool dry closet if you cant afford anything else

Depending on 'orange' it could be residue from the cosmoline still leeching out when you wipe it.

Where in OH?

I think its a combination of both. And I no longer keep it in the gun case.. I keep it with the rest of my toys in a cabinet so it wont be lonely.

Close to Jim Balogh's fun shop in Grafton I see.
If you want a full refinish to seal it better, see Travis Assen's thread in the Polish forum for a guy you can just drive to in Youngstown. Drives are not free but can beat another layer of shipping fees.
