How much of a project is it to convert a standard underfolder to, say, a Romanian side folder? What tools and such will I need? Also, what other kinds of side-folders do you guys consider high quality? I know I've seen side folders similar to the Bulgarian one used with AK74s a lot. What kind of side folding stocks do you guys see AK-using special operations units use? |

HUGE project. It really doesn't make sense, the underfolder has so much mod to the back of the receiver, and a different trunion. Romanian side folders just go right on the standard full stock rear trunion. Best bet is to get another inexpensive AK and put a folder on it, or sell the UF, get a standard and side folder, and use the excess $$ to buy mags and ammo. |

Yeah that's true, UFs are soooo evil. They are not comforable to shoot, the stock is slow to deploy, it's very hard to work the safety when the stock is folded....and yet when you don't have one you have a deep sense of loss that is only partially fixed with alcohol, and only fully resolved once you have one. So dude, keep it and buy a romy with a wire side folder. Trust us, we obviously are way deeper into the disease than you are...for now. |

Haha, yeah, I love the underfolder, I'm just curious about making it a little more "high speed." I'm in the process of fitting my underfolding 47 with a hunter green pistol grip, red dot sight, Ultimak hangrip sight mount, and hopefully I'll be able to find a vertical foregrip that will work with the underfolding action... |
![]() Don't do that! Your UF (the whole rifle) with all that crap on it will look like ass. Be a purist, if you're gonna put all that stuff on it, do it with a Tapco folder, not a nice UF! If you're interested in a vertical foregrip, I'd say go with the Romy takeoffs that are around $20. Nothing black plastic and vertical belongs on any AK (IMO). These won't work with your underfolder, but if you start a sidefolder project, they're a great choice. I still like the standard grip better, but everyone has to have at least one Romy vertical grip. |
Nooooooo.....! The UF is the best AK to keep stock! My first UF was a Polish kit that was run over by a tank. Maybe I'll post pics sometime. The stock was bent, bolt handle bent, lower HG smashed, and barrel was bent. I put them in a press and squeezed them back into place. It shoots 8" goups now, but it's my favorite UF. Thanks for listening. |
I would like to hear the history and see pictures. |
