It was a underfolder that looked great. After fondling it for a bit I noticed that neither the gas block or the gas tube had any kind of vent holes. Is this correct?

No, there are no gas holes in the gas tube on an AKM. AK47s and Chinese guns have the vent holes along the sides of the gas tube. What you saw is correct.
