How do AK47 and AK74 bolt carriers differ?   I thought it would just vary with the bolt itself, but I see different listings for hte 47 and 74.

The 74 is machined down and lighter. I don't have a pic handy, but a bunch of meat is missing on the left rear of the carrier.

Will a 74 fit on a 47.  I have a SAR1 and thinking about getting a new carrier and piston.

NO.

Gas piston is also a different length.

Thanks.

Is it just the piston that makes it incompatable?  I am guessing the piston is of different length due to the gas block style?

Will another countries 47 (ex: Bulgarian)  work in the SAR1?

AK74 use a small pattern bolt, the AKM pattern use a large pattern bolt, that is the main difference. There is also some minor differences between manufacturing countries. I have a Romanian AKM bolt carrier for sale in the EE.

Chris Butler at AK-USA used a 47 piston on my 74 build.  The 47 piston was a tad bit longer but according to Chris it would work just fine and he was right, it did.
