I haven't seen many pictures of Soviet night vision around here, so I figured I would add them...

1PN58

1PN51

My impressions are that the 58 appears clearer but has a bad fish-eye effect.  Both are extremely bulky compared to western equipment.

ETA:  This probably isn't the right forum, but the optics forum looks pretty dead...

If I said the numbers out loud I'd have to kick my own a$$...

The 1PN58 was short of $1K, the 1PN51 came with an unfired NDM-86 Dragnov so I can't break it out of the overall package cost...

The 51 is a little rarer...

Just a tip though, the 58s dont handle international shipping very well. I have had two that I sent to the US, and both were working when they left Europe, were no longer 100% when they reach the US.. Something to do with the delicate reticle deal.

They sure are...  This was only the second I'd ever seen for sale.

My 58 made it from England fine - I have bought stuff from you and you packaged the items very, very well.  I guess they just beat the hell out of them in transit.

What's the hot setup for batteries on the 1PN58?  I have one, it's new, and I've never powered it up because of those funky russian batteries.

Is there a conversion out there?  How many volts do they run on?

You can modify the charger to use 110v standard power.  I got a modified charger with the 1PN51 and it seems to work pretty well.  There is some good info on that over at the gunsnet.net site...

When I bought my 51 in the mid 90's, they were running $1200.  They bring more now if you can find one.  The 51 is as bright as anything going, just not as clear/sharp as the older tube stuff.

Batteries.  Since they last quite awhile, I was not worried about recharging the originals.  Since the original battery cases come apart, I made a spacer and stacked two 3V lithiums inside.  It is a tad snug but it's been working now for several years with no problems.

Any chance you have pictures of your modified battery?

Here are a few of a 9v battery modification...

Sorry, can't snap any as I traded the scope to a friend a few konths back.    Before the delrin sleeve was made, I just taped the batteries end to end and centered them in the battery case.  If I remember correctly, the scope is 5.25 volts so I thought using 6V would be better.  Use those 3V camera batteries.

My batteries are completely different.  They are white, square, and I'm supposed to pour electrolite in them.

I guess I should post some pics.
