How do I make the plunger deal work?  The barrels are threaded, I just can't figure out how to get the nuts off.

A nut or a welded piece of pipe...its like pipe...just dremel thru the small welds and twist it off. Pin will pop right out to where it belongs.

NHM-91s had a solid pin if I recall correctly.

You should:

- Dremel/cut the weld holding the nut

- Dremel/cut the pin so the nut will unscrew (left hand threads)

- Drive the FSB pin out so the remains of the solid detent pin will come out

- Order a new plunger/detent pin and spring and reinstall

On my NHM90 when I cut the pipe fitting off the end the detent pin popped right out and is functional...altho its stuck at this time LOL...it will pop back out when I go shooting. i think some will work and some wont...just depends.

First off you need to cut the spot welds holding the muzzle nut on. A Dremel tool with a Dremel #409 cut off wheel is the tool to use. The weld only is 1/16" to 1/8" deep in the gap between the muzzle nut and front sight base. Make sure to cut the weld on the muzzle nut side of it so you don't mess up the front sight base.

This sketch shows the relationship between the muzzle nut retaining pin and the front pin in the  front sight base. Notice the mbr pin has a notch in it to clear the fsb pin. This is so you can push it in to remove the muzzle nut and it stops the pin from coming all the way out.

All the NHM-91 rifles I have worked on had a mbr pin without a notch cut in it pressed into the mbr pin hole in the fsb. This resulted in the pin bending and also bending the front pin in the fsb.
So you will have to drive the front pin out of the fsb from the left side.(hold the rifle like you are shooting it and the side your left hand is on is the left side of the rifle)
If the pin in bent to much you may need to use a drill bit smaller than the pin and drill about half way into it. Then use a punch the same size as the drill bit to knock the pin out. Once the pin is out drive a screwdriver between the muzzle nut and mnr pin. Bend the pin up then grab it with pliers and pull it out. This will take several bendings and pullings for the pin to come out. When the pin is out screw the muzzle nut off the barrel.
New pins can be bought or are easley made by spinning a nail/welding rod/drill rod in a drill or drill press and using a file to cut them to the correct diameter wile the rod spins. Filing the notch is just a trail and error deal as long as it slides easy in/out and can be pushed in enough to screw the muzzle nut on all the way.
