An AK-47 uses a milled receiver, an AKM uses a stamped sheetmetal receiver.

I would have to say that the AKM is better.  it is lighter, and honestly if you can manage to wear out a sheet metal receiver then you have far more money to spend on ammo and new barrels than I ever will in this lifetime.

I prefer milled receiver rifles for the "quality" that they have, but I also own stamped receiver rifles.

The Russians wanted a stamped receiver because of the ease of manufacture and the cost.  They had some difficulties in production and early on switched to the time tested milling a billet of steel method.  Milling the receiver is a whole lot more time consuming and much more expensive.

Once they got the design corrected and improved enough to do a stamped receiver, the Russians introduced the AKM in 1959 and they haven't looked back.

Other countries followed suit, but the Bulgarians kept making milled receivers and to this day their issue 7.62x39mm rifle uses a milled receiver, while their 5.45mm issued rifles have the standard AK-74 stamped receiver.

Economically, it makes more sense to make them out of stamped receivers.  Quality wise, there aren't many stamped guns that can hang with the milled guns.

A properly built and heat treated stamped receiver will still outlast you.
